Ok flab i know you got alot on your plate, but a topic resently reminded me of a request.  A rep system, there is one on this forum http://www.uogamers.com/forum/index.php and it works out well.  Just something to consider while your working on the current problems and such.

Well this is nice. We can see who's respectful or who's being annoying. :)

If this works out, it might be nice to add a list to the statistics page of the people with the highest karma.  Although, at the moment it just seems like one big popularity contest.

If the karma system gets abused, I'll turn it off.  It should not be a popularity contest.  Karma should be used to indicate who has insight and knowledge about Soldat and all of the various parts of the community.

Don't complain to me if you think it is getting abused or turning into a popularity contest, I'll see it on my own.  I don't want a PM every time you get voted negative or think it is being abused.  I'm increasing it to 24 hours for a repeat.

No, this isn't meant to be a contest.  This is meant to be simply an indicator of how much people think other people know about what is going on, how to mod something, how to map, how to run servers, etc etc.  This is for your use so you know whose opinion to trust, not so you have a bigger e-penis.

Perhaps you should contribute a little.  ;)

On another note, I'd really like to see that 'smite' button go away.  I'm pretty sure the idea was to measure how much you've helped out, not how much you haven't.  So if people don't think you've contributed anything, they simply won't give you any karma.

I think the karma is more of a "is this person cool or not?" kind of thing.

If we took away the smite button, it'd become just like the THANKS! system on facepunch. In my opinion, the thanks thing sucks. Having a negative side to the whole thing helps distinguish who truly doesn't do much other than troll, etc.

Although i think the names should be set to [WIN] and [FAIL]. ;D

But that's the problem, people will -rep someone simply if they don't like their signature or something. :-\ Mine went from 0 to +1, then to -1, now it's at 0 again. :|

Having a negative side to the whole thing helps distinguish who truly doesn't do much other than troll, etc.

We already know who trolls.  Besides, they shouldn't lose karma just because they don't contribute -- some people just don't know enough about the game or lurk on the forums enough to help people out before someone else gets there.  And you know this'll be abused the instant someone asks a stupid question or suggests that Michal puts vehicles in the game (if it isn't abused anyway).

Still, if the Smite button is left in, we could at least take away people's anonymity by having a list at the bottom of each post telling who Smote/Applauded it -- that would make people accountable for what they do and most likely lessen the amount of abuse.

... and/or make it so you can only applaud/smite a post once, so it's more like rating that particular post. That way you can tell if someone's bashing someone by checking the log Vij. suggests, and he could be straightened out pretty quickly.

Be warned that the karma system will bring some spammy threads for those who are new to such a system. Most likely they'll instantly be demoted for their innocence. :( I've seen it happen at another board I regularly attend, so a log would definitely be a must-have on such a big forum as this, if it's codable.

Karma will greatly improve the quality of this forum once the shine wears off.  Anyone who refers to karma as a popularity contest should be modded down, because they obviously don't care or don't understand and aren't trying to.  I've specifically said multiple times that this isn't a popularity contest, and the last thing we need are people trying to sabotage it.

I agree with you on this one, but i guess we'll have to see what happens.

I have a question though, i'm not quite sure what is ment about the 24 hour time period. Is there a limit to how many people you can do in 24 hours? Or is it somthing else. Thanks much

after glancing at your recent posts, 95% of them are spammish and useless.  That is why people "hate" you.  This is the karma system doing exactly what it is meant to do.  If you stop posting garbage on the forums, you'll see your karma maybe become positive some day.

The system works perfectly, you're a posterboy for it.  Even if you never become positive, you can take pride in the fact that you're a perfect illustration of how this is all supposed to work...

@kingkitty: then it'd be a nuisance, really. If it could be limited to 5 members, that's fine with me.

... just don't post about it, please.
lol, I warned ya :P Complaint-threads about karma will ALWAYS pop up on larger forums it is implemented in. I think ignoring 'em would probably be the best thing to do.

So there's no way you can implement some kind of personal log, or do you actually hold faith in that the community's maturity will eventually dominate? ;D
