Perhaps you should contribute a little.  ;)

On another note, I'd really like to see that 'smite' button go away.  I'm pretty sure the idea was to measure how much you've helped out, not how much you haven't.  So if people don't think you've contributed anything, they simply won't give you any karma.

I think the karma is more of a "is this person cool or not?" kind of thing.

If we took away the smite button, it'd become just like the THANKS! system on facepunch. In my opinion, the thanks thing sucks. Having a negative side to the whole thing helps distinguish who truly doesn't do much other than troll, etc.

Although i think the names should be set to [WIN] and [FAIL]. ;D

But that's the problem, people will -rep someone simply if they don't like their signature or something. :-\ Mine went from 0 to +1, then to -1, now it's at 0 again. :|

Having a negative side to the whole thing helps distinguish who truly doesn't do much other than troll, etc.

We already know who trolls.  Besides, they shouldn't lose karma just because they don't contribute -- some people just don't know enough about the game or lurk on the forums enough to help people out before someone else gets there.  And you know this'll be abused the instant someone asks a stupid question or suggests that Michal puts vehicles in the game (if it isn't abused anyway).

Still, if the Smite button is left in, we could at least take away people's anonymity by having a list at the bottom of each post telling who Smote/Applauded it -- that would make people accountable for what they do and most likely lessen the amount of abuse.

... and/or make it so you can only applaud/smite a post once, so it's more like rating that particular post. That way you can tell if someone's bashing someone by checking the log Vij. suggests, and he could be straightened out pretty quickly.

Be warned that the karma system will bring some spammy threads for those who are new to such a system. Most likely they'll instantly be demoted for their innocence. :( I've seen it happen at another board I regularly attend, so a log would definitely be a must-have on such a big forum as this, if it's codable.

The system works well on the forum i posted, if you want flab in your spare time make an account and pm a mod with some questions about it. Yeah I really do think it will work well long as people want good karma they will try to be helpful and not spam.

Karma will greatly improve the quality of this forum once the shine wears off.  Anyone who refers to karma as a popularity contest should be modded down, because they obviously don't care or don't understand and aren't trying to.  I've specifically said multiple times that this isn't a popularity contest, and the last thing we need are people trying to sabotage it.

You know, to destroy karma abusing entirely, have the person only be able to + or - one person per 24 hours. It works well on other forums.

Because this is a soldat forum, the karma systen will always gonna be a popularity contest no matter how many times we implement this function in.

I honestly don't know what you're talking about Spyder. The forums are more mature than ever, without the Bash Pit.

No, seriously; people will get bored of whoring karma after a few days I recon.
