It seems that animated gifs cannot be uploaded via the forum uploader, was this intentionally?

the smilies are made to work like that so that it reduces the number of times that a smiley will show up by accident in a normal sentence. 

As for the "forum uploader," what are you talking about?  Are you talking about using gifs in your avatar, or as an attachment to a post?

I tried uploading an animated gif for my avatar shortly ago, and it didn't work for me either.

Edit: The size limit for avatars is freaking 20 kb?!
