Post-mortem Jetting
« on: September 26, 2006, 09:50:45 pm »
Fairly simple suggestion:

If a Soldat dies while jetting, the jetpack stays active until it's out of energy, thus propelling the ragdoll around.

Potential difficulties: I don't how Soldat handles corpses, technically speaking.  It might be impossible to give a ragdoll the ability to jet, and it also might be difficult to keep the thrust vector aligned with the foot Gostek.

BTW, this idea was inspired by Tribes Vengeance -- it looks fantastic in that game and it would look equally cool in Soldat.

Wow..that would be sweet...I know that the corpse is reused and the poa just changes, so if you respawned the body would just dissapear when it was flying which would be a lil freaky. anyways i think i support.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about that too.

Otherwise, I kinda like this idea. But wouldn't this cause more packet sends, or am I mistaking?

This has been brought up in the past as well with other ragdoll effects.
Im sure it could somehow effect packets, it would still be entertaining nonetheless.

As long as it was completely client-side -like corpses are rendered now- I would agree, although that may wreck the whole effect of it, it would stop any lag at least.
I like it!

Why, what purpose would this serve to improve our gameplay? What is wrong with the current way corpses die? Is there any reason why this should be implemented? Pros? Cons?

Since no reasons given, I say no.

Well I mean, why do we have poa animations, why do we have ragdol effects, they add nothing to the core gameplay but make it much more fun.

This would look awesome - but I doubt Michal could make it. (provocation)

I sugeested something very similar to this a long time ago and everyone exploded about it. Even MM himself posted in my topic, in the old forums and thought it would be pretty cool.

The thread was made back in Soldat v1.2.1; there's still no corpse-jetting. :P But we can dream, eh?...

Killing someone that is jetting to escape from you then seeing his dead corpse fly around would be amazingly cool, so it WOULD improve the gameplay. (ish)

But really, this idea sounds GREAT.

Support.

The corpse wouldn't fly around. Because of the way the jets work, the body would just float up.

Sounds awesome. Maybe the jets just drag the person around flinging him when they run out.

Old suggestion, still ike it.

Time of corpse on map would have to increase in normal mode.

*beep*

The corpse WOULD fly around. The only reason it normally flies up is because the animation has the soldat's legs facing downwards. A corpse with active jets would flail insanely because it's moving totally according to ragdoll alone, not any set animation.

Exactly.  It would look like when you blow up a balloon and then release it.

edit: except not as exaggerated, of course ;)

wouldnt that get REALLY annoying, seeing like a million people flying around like mad men everywhere and being annoying, and besides, i kinda like seeing falling limp bodies all over the place :)

Well, as I envision it, the bodies would disappear as usual (when the player respawns).  If the jets run out of juice before respawn, they'll turn off and the corpse will stop flying.  So you wouldn't see any more bodies than usual.  Also, they wouldn't all be flying, since not everyone is jetting when they die.
