Yeah, it'll basically just annoy you to death with the messages about purchasing a copy when you first start it, but other than that you should have no problems with it even years after your trial has "expired." You could also choose to use QuakeNet's web chat client if you'd prefer.

You could also try Miranda or Pidgin, if mIRC starts to really annoy you.
