Shading in Polyworks
« on: October 07, 2006, 12:02:21 pm »
Today I downloaded Polyworks, and now I wonder how can I give the polygons different colors and shadings in that program?

I know how to do it with Map Maker but I can't figure it out in Polyworks.

I read the help file and searched for tutorials on this board, but I couldn't find anything, sorry if I did overlook that.

Could somebody please explain it to me?

There are 2 tools to colour polygons (and sceneries as well):

Vertex colour (default hotkey D) - works just like a brush. Click and drag to colour vertices. If there are vertices selected only those will be affected. Hold alt to get a colour from a vertex or scenery. Hold ctrl to move the current selection.

Poly colour (default hotkey E) - works just like bucket fill. Click in a poly or scenery to colour it. If there are vertices selected all of them will be affected. Hold alt to get a colour from a vertex or scenery. Hold ctrl to move the current selection.

The current colour is shown on the palette panel. This panel also controls other parameters of this instruments such as radius of Vertex colour tools, colouring mode, transparency (strenth)...

But to obtain perfect colouring and shading you should also provide proper polygon structure...

Did you really read help file?

I did read the help file, and I also know these two tools.

But they don't work, and I never see a color shown in the palette panel.
I can click on the polygons with one of these tools and nothing happens, and I don't know where to choose the color.

I also do hold alt and click somewhere to get a color, but nothing happens.

If you click on the large box in the palette window it will bring up a colour picker, you can make your colours and then add them to the palette by right clicking.

Also in the pallette window, make sure the opacity is set to 100% and that the mode is "normal".

Also, if your palette only has shades of gray, click on the arrow above it and select Load Palette.  Then select "MZPalette.txt" to load the default color palette.

Thx, now I found out what was the problem, the boxes (like palette box) didn't even all show up, I had to change that under "windows".  :- ::)

Now I encountered another problem.

I shaded some polygoms with "average vertix colour" and also made some other changes, then I did save the file.

When I opened it again, the polygoms where unshaded again, though all the other changes were saved.

Now my question is, what can I do to also save the shadings?
I also tried with compiling the file before saving, didn't work either.

To save vertices colours you need to *Apply colours to vertices* at the Edit menu.

Actually I think this can be helpfull only if you are shading and colouring using new Polyworks Light and DepthMap tools.

Here's my ancient palette, I still use it:

All color values are multiples of 16.
