What is Karma?
« on: October 13, 2006, 03:47:15 pm »
What is Karma?

Karma is a system that allows you to anonymously give your opinion on other people's posts and general behaviour on the forum. It is not meant to be a popularity contest, this is why there are no "Top Karma" list on the forum. It is simply an instrument to judge other's posting.

How do I modify other user's Karma?

You need to have made at least 25 posts before you can applaud/smite other people in order to affect their Karma. When you meet the requirement, click the [applaud] or the [smite] link under a user's Karma count. Applauding another user adds one point to their Karma, and smiting subtracts one point.

There is also time limit for modifications, currently that limit is 72 hours. That means that if you applaud someone, you have to wait 72 hours before modifying his Karma again.

Are there any limits on how negative/positive your Karma can get?

No.

Are there any advantages of having positive Karma? Or any disadvantages of having negative Karma?

No, it is only a judge of posting. You can simply ignore it if you feel offended by it.

Are there any way to find out who's applauding/smiting me?

No, the system is completely anonymous.

Hey, why is my Karma so low?!

Try to think about how contributing your recent posts were. If you think they were all proper, then simply ignore your Karma indicator - it's that simple. And after all, it's only a number.

That's really everything I could think of, if I've forgotten anything then go ahead and tell me.

if we lock this, then people will be forced to create new topics whenever they have a question, thus not containing the "newbish topics"

Shouldn't Karma have a 72 hour delay on smites but a 48 hour delay on applauding? You know, like with seperate 'timers'.

That would make it a bit too unbalanced for my taste. If someone is acting like a big jerk you should have equal rights to smite him as opposed to applauding him.

"People" being those who doesn't understand the whole purpose of the system. I'm sure that there are those who use the karma system responsibly.

I'm not really in favor of the karma system because it just stifles healthy debate. With the inherent player base Soldat has, you can't really rely on people to use karma in a responsible way.

Edit: Heh, getting smited now only proves my point. XD

Look here to try to find a reason why. Many people doesn't enjoy writings like "writs like dis if u understand me, kk". For further reference on your case, check me, me, me, me (giving no reason why) and me. Just trying to help you out, no offense.
