Different job now -- working for the same boss, but under a different area.  My job is now to find the cellular processes behind coral bleaching.  For those bionuts out there, most of what I'm trying to figure out is how Ca2+ and Na+ regulate the exocytosis of Zooxanthellae out of sea anemones (sea anemones are much easier and quicker to grow than coral and we think they bleach through the same process).

Currently, I'm just reading up on other research that has been and is being done.  Stuff like this.  Luckily, I don't have to read as much as the person I'm working under and I get to do most of the fun stuff, but it's still eating away at a lot of my time... and we haven't really started our experiments yet. =\

Sounds like a very demanding job. Is it all work and no play, or do you enjoy it and have fun too?

At least you don't have to use a bunch of HF acid at your job :/  I'm worried about burning my hands off or inhailing a huge wiff of acidic vapor if I'm not careful.

My work is my play.  I love what I do.  But yes, I do get time to have fun and mess around with stuff if I want.  High-powered microscopes, anyone?  Hangnails have never been so awesome, or so huge.

We're installing a laser next month and we'll be working with acids when we start our experiments.  :)
The odd thing is that we should be playing with acids at about the same time that we're taking the fume hood out of the lab... hopefully that means we'll only be working with diluted acids, otherwise my lungs are going to hate me.

Seriously?  Why would anyone remove a fume hood?  I can't imagine you'd be working with anything too harsh, I mean..we're dissolving rocks and minerals, so high molar acids are a must in most cases.  I'd imagine it's different with organics, but still..that's just too much of a risk man.  You'd beter stay safe..get a pair of gills or something.

We need the space which, I guess, is more important than safety.  We should be using the acid mainly to pH balance the sea water we're going to be making, but we'll still have to dilute it from that highly concentrated, your-legs-melt-if-you-drop-it stuff.  I always get the willies when I have to do that.

I hear ya man..I'm just learning the basics of the routine we go through for dissolving samples.  Each step has a different kind of acid..from HF, to nitric, to different molarities of HCl, there are about eight steps involving acids.  The only thing I have to protect me are the golves, my lab coat just works against acetone.  If it weren't for the fume hood I'd be in a world of hurt.

I actually have a pretty interesting story about another student who thought he inhaled some HF once..heh heh.  Funny stuff.

my "job" is damage control tasks in the sub.
i'm supposed to analyze, try to minimalize, and report any damage inflicted on the submarine i'm in.

ofcourse, no enemy has submarine force, there are no close underwater hazards, and the only threats are offseas.

pretty much my job is to take off every week to a northern city, put on my army uniform (and PVC tag thank you very much), and sit bored in a submarine.

i get paid 900$ a month which is pretty sweet for someone who's in the army (govermential benefits).

I actually have a pretty interesting story about another student who thought he inhaled some HF once..heh heh. Funny stuff.

One of my TAs freshman year accidentally mixed a strong acid with a base, then closed the cap on the container too tightly.  The thing exploded, the fumes got in his eyes and lungs, and he freaked out because he thought he would never see again.  He was fine afterwords, but he's lucky as hell.

bja, we actually have really safe working conditions.  We have other fume hoods in other labs that we can use if we really need to, by the way.

Working at my mom's store, selling incense and other weird stuff.
I do chores for random people and stuff.
Currently looking for a job at a place that will actually pay me. (and will hire a 14 year old. eh.)
