« on: June 15, 2006, 04:35:20 am »
I beleive soldats next version of soldat needs a Nickname registration that registers your name so only YOU can use it, it will stop posers. what do you think?

it is not going to happen, it takes  too much time to make such a thing and it would require one central server that never goes offline... and if it does go offline, nobody can play soldat

And what about clans and such? And if someone does steal a nickname it's probably because it is common. You can also play on servers which let you register your nick on them

There was the nickname auth program that Enesce made a while ago, but of course it only works with the servers that have nickname auth implemented.

Basically it just set your IP to your name and if someone enters the server with your name but not your IP they are kicked.

It's a good idea, just way too hard to implement. Just think about the hundreds(?) of Soldat players out there and you are bound to get a few people who want the same name.

You can register on the site a unique name, but it's not bound to any IP, at least as far as I can tell.

Static IDs would be nice for stat tracking and such, but since that's not done within the game, I don't see the advantage.

No, not needed and would be too unreliable.
Use EnEsCe's service if you wish.

I think it'd be nice, but way too hard to implement and maintain, which seems to be the general quarrel with this. Yeah, also the whole clan tags thing, you'd have to register another nick, and all that jazz, so really it doesn't really seem like it'd be worth all the time or effort.

If it went offline, it could just be programmed to not have the account program in effect. You could also have a changeable clan tag spot eg. [    ] Major

If you play WarHammer 40k: Dawn of War or Winter Assault, you have to register a name and that's the only name you use. But the problem is if you join a clan, you have to re-register again, which get's annoying, and i think that's the sort of problem that will happen here.

I agree with FLAB, it's probably never gonna happen.
Soldat has bugs, it would be better if Michal focused a little on them instead of wasting time in new features (that cause new bugs).

And as somebody else said, you would need to re-register (or update your account) everytime you wanted to play with a different nickname. The central server would also need LOADS of space and bandwidth to to keep all accounts and handle all auth requests.

.

I use EnEsCe's nickname authentication service on all of my servers, and it does exactly what this "feature" would do.  I believe he has a thread about it on these forums, and if not I'll get him to re-post one so you guys can hear all about it

Well then couldn't you get backup servers?  Also, it already happens that sometimes people can't play soldat because the lobby is down and they cannot browse available servers...
Can't think of anything original to put here...

even if it is impossible, i still think it would be cool
Your acting like your having a duel and your opponent gets a pistol and you get a spork.
Isn't that pretty much what it is? I dunno wtf a spork is, I suppose it's way weaker than the pistol since you compared that to this.

You can always use All Seeing Eye (ASE) when the lobby is down.
