I mostly use MSN and mIRC, MSN mostly because it has become so widely accepted by people and nearly everyone I know uses it.

^^ Same. Allthough I don't use mIRC these days, I'd still recmmend it. It's an excellent program.

Trillian -- It's AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN all in one. Meebo requires a constant browser window since it's web-based. Trillian is a standalone client.

I personally use MSN unless I am talking to a friend on AIM or Yahoo! Messenger.

Use Skype :) It's similar to MSN without all the worthless, annoying crap (i.e. nudges, etc.). It has full IM/chat with all the same features of every other IM client despite being a voice chat / free internet phone program.
The new AIM (AIM Triton) is also fairly good.

I use Gadu and MSN/ICQ/AIM. Prefer MSN.

btw, IRC programs arent IM, more-so chat rooms.

MSN for friends, mIRC for Soldat clan wars/gather. As EnEsCe said, mIRC is more of a chatroom than an IM.

For some reason I hate mIRC but love Deviant Art chat, even though they are almost the same thing. Maybe its the skin that does it.

use whatever protocol you want, but I suggest you use gaim as your client - http://gaim.sf.net


it is like a slightly less-shiny version of trillian, but it is open-source with lots of plugins and functionality

personally I would suggest AIM over MSN because MSN has very limited formatting abilities.  eg you can't change one word to be bold without making the whole message bold... thus stupidifying the entire reason that bold exists in the first place (along with italics, underline and just about every other type of formatting)

Yeah dude use xfire, that's the one I actually use use.....I use msn just for talking to friends which I barely do on msn.

I use mIRC for my IRC and IM needs... I use an mIRC script called MSN DX, which is a very nice little recreation of the MSN Messenger client (besides, I don't use Yahoo or AIM anymore, so it's ideal).
