The "Windows Vista" Official Hate Thread
« on: October 20, 2006, 10:40:44 pm »
I hate it because the hardware that we have right now might not properly run on Vista. That sucks so if you were planning to upgrade to Vista, but getting hardware now, think twice.

Also not all the drivers will be read by vista. God damnit vista will suck...

Vista will be used by all those big wig companys, and extreme nerds....I'll stock with Window XP thanks. If everything ran on Linux, I'd sell my copy of Windows XP and go Linux...

People who don't know any better. All of the "extreme nerds" are already using Linux or another UNIX-compatible OS.

Well it's true! Plus DX10/DX9 and other compatibility errors forcing people to upgrade suck.

EDIT: FRITZ CHIP!  :o

I'll switch over when I figure out how to turn off all the useless shit.

I know my file structure like the back of my hand. I will never need something indexing my files in the background.

If you were a developer, and knew the coding lnguage, wouldn't you want to edit and/or add things to make it suit you better?

well no, i dont neccesarrly hate open source. The fact is that it is too unique, and we should rely on third party programs to help us . Most things dont do stuff right out of the box.

When has Microsoft ever done anything right straight out of the box? And there's nothing wrong with the unique-ness of open sourced OS'.

get a mac and dual boot.

A majority of the software will run on a Microsoft OS until something drastic takes place, that's the truth.  Every buisiness in the country runs Windows already and it' not about to change.

I am starting to lean towards a mac more than ever for it's compatiblilty with windows and it's little apple logo.

You can whine, but microsoft will probally still rule the world with Vista.

When has any company done anything right straight out of the box? :) It is disappointing for a company as large as Microsoft to have so many issues with its flagship product, but it's hardly just Microsoft as far as developers shipping products with bugs go.

why support open source?

because:
1) the code is developed collectively by thousands of developers.  Anyone can see exactly what it is doing and report/fix bugs.  closed source programs like windows and all of microsoft's software would be far better off open source because it could be reviewed, patched, and supported by everyone else
2) open source projects are not trying to do things in a unique fashion in order to make a profit.  these projects and programs tend to follow the best and most efficient models (layered operating systems/software, inode based filesystems) and therefore run amazingly fast
3) due to (1), the software is not only less buggy... but far, far more secure
4) ... its free
5) there's lots of it, and lots of alternatives that are all compatible with eachother
(more reasons I'll provide later)

Several months ago I think on the old forums someone with a beta copy of Vista showed screens of soldat working on it, I'm willing to bet that it will be compatible with almost every current windows program so I don't think i'll have any problems with it.

At work we were testing Vista out on one of our spare laptops to find potential issues.

On one of our dual core laptops, vista used half of the RAM (used 512MB of our gigabyte) before even doing anything.  It didn't work with a lot of our networking programs (VPN and stuff), so unless you're using a desktop just for web browsing and chat, there's a decent chance that something you need won't work (particularly things that interact with the operating system on a low level like VPN clients)

6) open source won't do stupid shit like require you to buy Vista to get DirectX 11 and any newer versions (in other words, you'll need to buy Vista to play most new games that come out after next year)

Programs that need to write in th regestry. (90%) Need to be ran as administrator. Thats the only compatabilty issue I saw.

I've been wondering this for a while, but if Linux is always being edited, won't you have to constantly download new updates?
