On the old one I loved Kirby, and I could beat the majority of people with him, and I had all of the old "Advanced" moves more or less perfected.
Melee made Kirby feel weaker, however, and memorizing more skills, considering I lack a Gamecube, would be a hassle. Although I love Marth, there (Fire Emblem!), and I am not too bad, the controls and some of the "advanced" moves have the same concept as the stuff on the old game, although there are way too many to remember now.

EDIT: And it seems a lot of the special skills for Melee are character-reliant, so...

Isn't it interesting how all Nintendo had to do to create a kick-ass fighting game was to assign moves to specific directions on the joystick instead of having us memorize counterintuitive forward-to-back-plus-weak-punch techniques just to do an uppercut?  That, and switching from senseless health stealing to knocking other players off the stage...

Funny that, I was thinking about that last week when I was playing my cousin in Tekken 3.

Super Smash Brothers is by far one of the best games ever, and I'm speaking from experience from playing my n64   ;D
Ness is my favourite and with him, I can own anyone  :P

I haven't played the gamecube version but I have seen it and the biggest change is the levels. Thats practically the only game I'd consider buying the gamecube for. I'm put off from buying the gamecube from a bad experience playing a war game (think it was COD or MOH) and having the worst control layout ever (you had to aim and also shoot using the right thumb).

Other than that SSB will live on forever.

if you want to get more advanced you can actually hit different directions if you push LEFT to the top You hit at a higher angel actually throwing them in another direction and doign more damage hence being a face hit

THen you can just to LEFT smash and its strait to the body

THen LEFT bottom and you will hit there feet the physics are to wonderful.

When I played, I always used either Zelda or Mewtwo. No idea why.
