Well I've decided it's almost impossible to go, mostly because my parents will wtf that I'm going to china with a marine that I've never met before.

INSTEAD I'll be going to tokyo in 2009 with friends. Maybe I'll visit china, and go see you guys.

2009? Great, I'll be out of graduate school by then. I'm game, and I've already experienced hiking 20 miles a day with a full pack.

One question - If we don't know Chinese how do we expect to get around? Especially if we head out into the countryside where even more remote dialects may be spoken.

Cantonese isn't that bad to follow, which is what they would likely speak out in the countryside(probably would do fine with a Lonely Planet guide to common phrases about basic things(Very helpful and sorted by topics, even on how to pick up chicks and to see a doctor for an std

)), and if your in the areas around Hong Kong, you could probably find a fair amount of people who speak english as well.

yep hes right there are many books that tell simple ways to say things that we would need and could buy money can be aquired in there currency before we actually leave...
