Public speaking is an important life skill.
« on: November 16, 2006, 02:45:54 am »
First I would like to say, THUG4LYFE, wesside and big up yourselves. Cliff notes at the bottom.

So I'm taking a public speaking class, but it's a business speech. Ironically we don't give many speeches(but the teacher is a ****ing goddess of people skills, I would eat her **** just to be 1% as good as her). She emphasizes a lot of time that people who get the most promotions have people skills rather than technical skills, AT ANY JOB.

Fear of public speaking is ranked as number 1 among people. Fear of death is number 2. Ouch.

Now today everyone in my environmental studies class everyone had to give a presentation on their chosen topic. Let me tell you it was bad. From the first person that presented it was bad. People were quiet, reading from a paper instead of making eye contact, their hands were shaking like they're on drugs, very closed body language and constant fidgeting.  Here's a little info: if you're nervous your audience will be nervous.

Only about 3 people did a good job. The first person did good because they spoke about a controversial topic that they felt strong about. You're usually gonna do good if you're talking about something you know a lot about and have a strong opinion. The second person was just very confident, and he projected his voice good but had a closed bodylanguage. Third girl was just crazy and a hippie.

Now it wasn't like I wasn't scared. I was, everyone is scared of public speaking. But instead of thinking like "****, ****, ****, **** don't tell me to go up there" I assumed a laid back, confident body position and in my head I was telling myself "I just wanna go up and to this, I'm gonna **** these mother****ers up, kill them with my eyes, I'm gonna rip their spines through their assholes and slit their throats". And what do you know, my nervousness COMPLETELY went away. You are the master of your emotions.

Well I'm not gonna tell you how I did, cause everyone's gonna accuse me of being full of myself or something, so let me just tell you I did good. I tried to use everything I know about successful presentation, bodylanguage, eye contact, projecting your voice, breathing, using pauses effectively etc.

Well the successful presentation got me into a talkative mood and I made many new friends, which in turn made me very happy. Score.

Cliff Notes:

Public speaking is an important life skill. That's why you should take a public speaking class/course/whatever any time you have a chance to. Booyakasha.

Yeah I was always a favorite in my speaking class due to my witty witness and strange topics of discussion, always filled with random facts that were very hard to find .

Yeah I am a fine public speaker if I do not have to use cue cards. If it is completely memorized, I am fine, completely written out, I am fine. The moment a note pops up on the page or card, and I have to interpret that into something understandable, I pause, shake, sweat - anything you can name that a nervous person does - and very slowly say the line. Then I continue on as if nothing happened, although inside I feel very unnerved.
I. Hate. Cue. Cards.

Whenever I have to do public speaking (which is common in my job), I remember two things. Be comfortable and don't shut yourself off. Just walk up with a smile on your face and be confident. I always found when I tried different methods taught by other people, I always screwed up. To be good, all you have to do is get in the mood and force out all the "OMFG WHAT DO THEY THINK" thoughts out of your head.

Nice description about what to do. I've always had a problem with public speaking. Not a major one though. I always slur my sentences together so it sounds like I just said one big heap of crap.

I'm not that bad either at speaking. You have good ideas. I'd rather rip the spine out thru the back though...

There was a study done, I can't be bothered to find it, but it was about whether people think they're good speakers or not. Obviously most thought they are but the experiments confirmed that they're freaking terrible.

Also like 4 year old said, know your stuff which can be kinda hard. In my classes I do a lot of presentations about crap I don't wanna talk about and that I'm not interested in. What I do is I learn at least some information about the subject(for example myosin heavy chains....like what the fuck is that ? I don't know but I did a presentation on it) and just, like in life, you don't need to know what you're doing, you just need to LOOK like you know what you're doing. Fake it, till you make it.  And speak slow with a lot of strategic pauses. Makes your presentation longer.

So the only argument you provided as to why it's an important life skill, is that it gets you promotions easier?

It is also so you don't look like a total dumbass every time you say something to more then 3 people.

Edit: You should know a lot more then what you present to everyone, because if they are interested afterwards and they have a question, you sound smarter then if you just say "Idono"

Also, it is importaint that you DON'T memorize, because you will forget and then pause to try to remember the 4th sentence in your 2nd paragraph about drunk driving, just remeber facts, where you got them, and what you think about it.

I read that study, although the way they did it is shitty. You don't necessarily have to drink, you just need to hang out with your co-workers and bosses at the bar.

drinking kills brain cells, and a few other cells, so no drinking here.
