Saving a .bmp in GIMP
« on: November 26, 2006, 12:12:23 am »
I've been drawing some gun mods for Soldat in the GIMP recently, but when I come to saving them I can't see any kind of .bmp in the list of file extensions...I have to save as .jpg which is annoying because it ruins the quality. Help?

I don't know about .bmp, but try .png instead.

I think soldat supports it for mods, and it has quality better than jpeg.

Plus Png has lossless quality which means when you save it, it will be the exact same as when you made it.

BMP is there near the bottom as "Windows Bitmap."

The file types for saving are sorted by their full names, not their extensions

but yes, use png.  PNG is an open standard, I believe the patent expired in the past few years (though I may be thinking of gif).  BMP, as you can see, is a windows format.

Thanks for the help, btw what is the point of saving as .jpeg? Is it compressed? It completely ruins the quality of the image. .PNG is the pwn.

Jpeg is better for photographs, like photos from a digital camera, png I am pretty sure is for all types of images, photos to soldat graphics.

Don't bother sifting through file extensions if you know that the end is .bmp, just save as [whatever].bmp

PNG is lossless, so it preserves a lot more quality than you need.  Always use JPEG if you don't need lossless, but use PNG if you need higher quality.  PNG has higher file sizes and if you use a good program like the GIMP to save in JPEG, setting the quality (when you save) to a higher value will almost always meet your needs
