DM On Top - Concept Map

On Top
DM, HTF, TM, CTF (beta)

Overview

Waypoint-ism : Non-believer
Suggest a player count ? : Sure. 4-6.

I originaly intended this to be a little deathmatch map. My buddy just got into Soldat and likes Deathmatches more than CTFs. Go figure.

Anyways, in my oh-so humble opinion, all the other DMs out there are crap for fast paced action. They're huge, and are often camped out by the spawners, who, by the way, I despise with a passion.

The upside down V shape at the top of the map is all iced. Any campers up there will be thoroughly displeased by the downward action that gravity exerts on 'em. The bottom level is more of a recovery zone in DM, as it is quite easy to dodge fire and get onto the healing polys wedged into the side of the shaft.

Speaking of the shaft, fast paced action dictates that there should be a quirky factor involved. The gold-ish platform under the shaft is highly bouncy, and makes for a nice recovery if shot down by an m79er.

Finaly, I'll be littering colliders througout the map after I get some advice on where to put 'em. So get cracking, I'd like to finish this by Monday.

First of all, it's damn fugly.  And as for gameplay, because the map is so small it will be too easy for people to mow down people as soon as they spawn from the top.

First of all, I run a game-mod where it's real difficult to spray. Secondly, you can run far away, very quickly here. I mean, let's take this possible situation :

Some dude w/chaingun is somehow spraying downhill (which he can't, as the recoil would push him into the pain polys at the peak). The guy at the bottom's gettn' pretty POed, so he drops down under the map, does a quick jump through the shaft, and flanks his ass.

Let's take another. Again, somehow, a guy is camping underneath the spawns. I didn't think I needed to point this out again, but the ground is ice so there isn't any aiming to be done there. Anywho, the people who are spawning have an awesome advantage over him, as they can nade spam to their delights (in CTF). This can't take place in DM, as there are no camping spots that I can see.

And lastly, I don't like pretty maps. I'm running a five-seven year old computer here, and it struggles mighty hard against the more scenery heavy maps. Any maps I will ever make are for gameplay first, looks second; so sorry if I haven't mentioned that before.

And by the way, can you elaborate on what you mean by mowing down ? I just can't see how someone could do it (and any suggestions on how to stop said camping).

I use autos, with any automatic weapon the person who is above always wins.  Unless they really suck, so when one person camps around the top part with an auto, they can easily get several kills before they are displaced.

I don't expect everyone to use my mod, I'm just saying that in my initial playtests, spraying wasn't an issue.

When you spawn, in CTF, you do it pretty high up. In DM, you're always near the other level of the map, be it on the edge of the V or in that shaft, so you can get away from harm lickedy-split. And it's hard to stay at the top, seeing as you have three points of attack, and you're sitting on a damaging poly.

And please explain how to make it better. I'm still a noob to mapping, and I need experienced help.

Edit: I changed the trees (yes those strange blobs of colour on the hill) into bullet blocking polys. What do you think of that ?

Aw, gee thanks for repeating what someone else said. I think we've confirmed that it looks like crap by now, so please get over it.

I keep on pointing this out, but there's always cover. The trees, the level below/above, that spot in the middle (with the squiggly lines below it). I mean, you can always spray in every map invented, but in this one, the spray-ee can get away. So please, if you're going to mention spraying again, please give me a way to stop it, other than 'restart and do another.'. And even if you want to say that, please give a few tips for the next maps I'll make. Because they'll keep coming, no matter how terrible you think they are.
