all - Pinball
« on: December 12, 2006, 08:25:44 pm »
I was recently playing a dodgeball game on soldat when it came to a map called db_Starball. Now if you play dodgeball at all you may know this map and that it haves a strange glowing light on each side of the field, where when stepped on will launch you into the air. Upon my discovery of this i was intrigued. Shortly after the match was over I open it in a map maker and discovered what causes this phenomenon and decided to use this feature to create a new map, this is the result as of yet...

It is currently not waypointed and it could use more graphics but since its playable I doubt i will ever get around to finishing that much as I am lazy, so I figured I would post it here so that others may enjoy it since I have no way of hosting a server with it and perhaps if I get enough positive feedback I will perfect it.

As mentioned it is playable in all basic gametypes, though some may be a little difficult to score in. The bumpers all work though the flippers and plunger for obvious reasons are stationary, but still bounce the players. If you like my strange and unorthodox map let me know I have others that I may post later if I have the time.

I love it just from the theme. Surprised it was db_Starball and not ctf_ping to inspire this. :) Downloaded and playing now. :)

Edit:

Please include the scenery with the map. :-\

Edit 2:

I love how you implemented a jump polygon plunger, but I think ctf_ping is better designed and visually appealing so far (though the latter could be due to the missing graphics :( ). The bumpers need to be better distributed and composed, because the square shapes just don't respond as real bumpers should, especially once you place round images over them. The flippers are way too high, and the well leading down should have bumpers just above and to the sides of the flippers. Round and smooth out the left ramp, remove that barrier and just go curve it downward so that it drains back into the table and can't be reached from the plunger shot. Probably should have a bit more jet, too. I really suggest you look at ctf_ping and pinball machines to have it look more like the real thing. :)

LOL I can't believe i forgot the scenery! :P  Sorry about that i've updated the attachment. I've never see ctf_ping, though that could be because I don't play ctf (Just to popular, which means more a** holes and hackers.) I'll look into smothing everything out when I add more graphic to make it look more like a pinball machine. But that barrier is based on real pinball machines though they can also pass through in one direction, but this way it can add an extra strategey to ctf and inf by allowing red to throw explosives or dieing while running to it to propell the flag out to an awaiting teammate.

Jump polygon? How are they made?
*Tests* The bouncy polygons are awfully buggy..

Jumppads are made by placing around 50 polygons on top of eachother.

Yet that launch plunger/jump polygon tunnel is a rather huge bottleneck to allow opponents easy attacks against them.

i just downloaded and will play it soon, but judging by the reactions its somewhat like ctf_ping.
ping isnt a ctf map, its more climb/fun map..

ill comment after ive played it as well

attached a screenshort of ping, yellow bounces..

EDIT: ive played it.. its not hard enough to be a climb map (easy to cap). i like this kind of maps though, would be nice if you could do as some people have suggested :)

I've been working on a new version with 4 paddles (see below) but I can't play it, whenever I try my character won't appear on the screen or it will just go black and close. I thought it was the high poly count but I reduced it by over 1,000 and it still won't work anybody know whats wrong?

Here's my attempt. :) I ripped off your circle bumper and flippers gix and used mat-na's amazing teleporters. Unfortunately, even though I deleted the "down" teleporter from the LED back into the playfield in favor of just a open drop, it's still working and likely increasing the polygon count. Fairly high polygon count at a bit about 1,800, and there is a polygon bug on the upper left flipper I still need to fix. I think I could probably rebuild this and have it at about 1,300 or so polygons, and I am still working on a center scenery graphic to spruce up the midsection and make it look more pinbally. :) Realize I really only have weapon-enabled CTF in mind for this map for use on the !Elite Party server. :P

Here's version 2! I decided to go with a circus themed pinball machine just for the fun of it. There are still no waypoints, though I'll probably fix that in my next update, and there's a slight bug where the bumpers send you through walls and off the level but I'm not sure how to fix that while still having them work. I should have all the scenery in it this time ;), let me know what you think.
