About Counter-strike Another question.
« on: December 16, 2006, 10:53:29 am »
My freind got counter-strike and i tried to help him but it said "Missing File hl.exe" or soemthinglike that. I kept telling him you need half-life to run it but isnt believeing me. Is'nt it true to need half-Life to run CS or is there another way?

EDIT:If its stand alone and playable how come its in a GCF file format it says how many kb it has under it and i understand that but there in a GCF file format its some kind of media format i dont understand whats going on.

Yes, to my knowledge you need Half-Life.

you need half life. You see, CS was created as almost like a mod for Half-life, CS uses Half-life's engine and source to run.

I thought CS came bundled with Half Life 2

I think that was in the Silver/Gold edition only. One could probably look it up on Wikipedia or something to be sure... but I can't be arsed.

He was talking about the old CS I believe. With Counter Strike Source, you don't need to own Half-life 2. Steam automatically download's Half-life 2, but you don't have access to play it.

For the Original CS, which I think you're talking about you need a copy of Half-life. So meh.

you need half life. You see, CS was created as almost like a mod for Half-life, CS uses Half-life's engine and source to run.

Are you tlaking about both :/

I'm pretty sure it dosen't either.  Afterall, they sold the CS games before Steam came out in their own seperate boxes.

CS 1.6 is currently a standalone game and does not need Half-Life 1.

Unless your CS version is below 1.6, I suggest you download a free update for your Counter-Strike from Steam so its 1.6.

Your copy of CS has to be legit to do so.

Edit:

Btw, don't expect Steam to work perfectly right now. :P

hl.exe
I'm guessing "hl.exe." means "Half-Life executable".
So yeah, you need half-life.

You won't need to worry about Half-Life as long you have a legit CS Serial Number.

Create a Steam account and insert your serial number.

You will get a free update to CS1.6.

With 1.5 you do, but with 1.6 you don't.
