Big maps - I'd like your opinion
« on: December 19, 2006, 05:28:10 pm »
I want to know wether the Realistic players among you like big maps. Let's see, We have the new great scenery packs, the new MOTW award, me being in a mapping mood and having christmas holiday in one week... What else can come out except for a map?  ;)

Most of you don't know me, I hang around at Leo's servers a lot and make a map every 5 months  :)

Now, enough babbling of the unknown guy, on to the question: big maps. I'd like to make a really big map, but I want to know wether people actually like the general idea of having a map made for realistic that contains 3 large and relatively open routes in slightly changing enviroments (Barren alpha base > Grass > Forest > Small Bunker outpost > Grass > Barren bravo base) And a tunnel underneath that has more space than usual so it doesn't turn into a spas/saw playground.

I'd say it'll be around 4 kamps wide and 2 high. With the forest not being a camper fest but with semi-cammo (transuculency not making you completely invisible). Would you people like this? I'll change this topic into the actual map topic around friday (when I've gotten rid of all my dreaded exams which are literally killing me and eating up all my free time).  :)

Just asking this so I'm not making a large slab of work without people liking or playing it ;)

Sounds like a more environmentally detailed, slightly larger ctf_Run to me.
That just depends on how well your mapping skills are. I'm sure plenty will download the map regardless of whether they're Realistic fans or not as long as your work is well-done. Go for it.

I'd personally prefer it as a 2-routed map with some platform at the main route. 3 routes on a huge map are hardly overviewable, especially in realistic mode
I like to have one Martini
Two at the very most
Three I'm under the table
Four I'm under the host

Then that makes it much easier for me, it's stupid to have a forest with a platform on top of it.

I though people'd start complaining if there's only 2 routes, but then again, the strength of trenchwar lies in having just one route... Even though this will not be a trenchwar map. :P

how about using treetops as platforms?

Then the trees would have to be huge (if you want to maintain a proper scale) and I don't like that. Screenshots coming very soon, just one more exam to torture me.  ;)

^ hits the spot, bigs map are ok as soon as they become too huge routewise.

well, I generally make large maps because thats all im into (though i have some success at small maps as well). And my suggestion to u, Yumago, is that the map needs to have a lot of unique and interesting spots, However! not too many so that its overwhelming. Remember open fields are unique spots as well, as long as the whole map isnt flat :)
U always need to be changing the scenery while staying in the theme, put a few houses here and there, a tank, a trench, a small hill with a small tower, a wheat field or w/e
Don't want to sound so preachy, but i had a lot of expeirence with huge maps and im just suggesting :)
