I have learned that one of the hardest and most depressing things to do is to try to make a girl still like you, if you don't still like her, don't try to stay with her or make it up to her until you've decided whether you do or not.

If you have decided that you don't still like her, just say it isn't her, say its your sudden change of visual attraction and absence of heart, if you decide that you still like her, buy her some stuff that tells how much you lover her, and spend an hour or more apologizing and promising it won't happen again.

Then you should definitely talk to her, tell her that Iraq got to you, and that you still want to be with her. You shouldn't decide anything until you finish your tour and get back to the states. I've seen pictures of your girlfriend and from what you say about her personality: you've just fucked up.  She was great.  But if that's not what you want in life, the least you could do would be to let her off easy -- use the 'ol "It's not you, it's me" routine so that she can leave you without any lingering scars.  Or, if you had decided to stay with her, you should've treated her with the same decency any human deserves...and more.
