Alpha transperency! How?
« on: December 20, 2006, 06:09:34 pm »
I've seen modders do graphics with alpha transperency, like explosions or jet flames and such. But I havent figured out how to do it.

So the question is: how to apply alpha transperency and what tranperency % do you recommend?

(im using paint shop pro, instructions for other software is also welcome)

I expect you know how .png images work, thats what they use. But after you make the .png you need to rename as .BMP. I believe thats how it works.

But I tried that, for the flamer's projectiles; they were invisible :(

Download and check out my Half-Life mod for soldat, take a look on the explosion folder and in-game, ull see how it can be made :)
Fix and disable this "C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE" It's a harmful trojan.

weren´t it all bmp files then its just to green the transparante part. or you can (maybe i dunno) use an tuner like in gimp to lay a green layer under the picture ant then one the tranpiracy down. I dunno if that works.
Lapis: You need a vacation or a bullet though the head both works just fine by me.

Can someone make a tutorial for how to use & make Alpha transperency? That would be great...
i mean for example, i made a jet flame with alpha transparency, saved in .png and replaced the original file and doesnt show in game, now there is the question, Why?

You have to either make a .png or .tga image and rename it to .bmp (must have known file extensions enabled on Windows, under folder options). The alpha transparency part varies with your program and method of applying it; I could write a GIMP tutorial for it, or one for .tgas, but I can't be bothered to at the moment.

The graphics in Soldat have to be .bmp or they won't show up in game.

I'm also clueless as to how to get transparency, though...
I attend grammar school, last grade, and ignorance is all around me. Well, good for them. Ignorance is bliss.

Vltava, I did that. The file I had was flame1.bmp (or whatever it was called), but it was a .png graphic. And it was invisible in-game.
