Avatar size limit...
« on: June 20, 2006, 03:41:26 am »
Ok, I'm not trying to be belligerant or anything, and I'm not normally one to gripe about rules, but I gotta say, 20 kb is a pretty dismal limit for an avatar. I put an hour or so of effort into a new avatar, only to find that it was illegal due to its monstrous 29 kb file size. I know that's partially my fault for failing to check first, but still. That's tiny. Wasn't the limit much higher on the old forums? :-\

Post the avatar, and I can find a way to reduce its size. The limit *was* 20kb and should stay that way, considering most posts contain less than 5k of text any way.

Rules were the same, 20 Kb for both avatar and signature.

I agree that it's a bit small, I'd up it to 40 kB or something, but then we would have to change the rules. And changing rules isn't a good thing, people start getting confused and would try to push the limits even further, since they know the rules can be changed...
This is my signature. It is made of text and win.

Barf. I could've sworn it was higher. But then again, I'm dumb.

Here's the image, anyway. I doubt much can be done with it, since it should already be optimized, although I didn't compile it myself.

And yeah, believe it or not, this did take around an hour. Leave me alone.

I'm able to reduce its dimensions, and thus reduce its file size, but you'd have to clean it up a bit and optimize it again.

Do you want it?

Here it is. Like I said it needs to be optimized again.

Thank you muchly. That should definitely be under the limit once optimized. Cropping the dimensions made a way bigger difference than I thought.

Edit: I also have the border saved somewhere, so fixing that is a copy-and-paste job, once I resize that.

the 20KB size limits are more than reasonable.  No image with those dimensions (90x90 or 125x300) should ever need to be over 20KB in size, and if it is then it can easily be reduced (as you just found out)

20KByte @ 5.6 kbit a sec is like 3 seconds.

20 k is reasonable.

Fair enough. Guess I don't know as much about this sort of thing as I thought I did.
