wth? http://vanishingpointgame.com/
« on: December 24, 2006, 05:30:22 pm »
So here I was browsing the microsoft site.
I see this picture:

I wonder, what is this?
I type that string of numbers, text, and characters in to notepad then go to http://vanishingpointgame.com/.

I paste it into the form and submit it, it says wrong key, what gives?

I then see the little counter that counts down roughly 15 days into the future, could that be when Vista or some other Microsoft project comes out?

what could this be?

A quick Google for it gave me the answer to that first thing, but there's more than that.
I won't spoil the first code here in case you really want me to. ;)

Seems like a clever viral marketing campaign to me.

Clever?  This was old the first few times I saw it.  They just did it for the new Transformers website as well.

A couple of minutes was all it took to find answers to a few of the keys, leading to different puzzles.

edit:
If you saw this on a MS blog, I don't think this is a MS-related advertising scheme.  The domain doesn't appear to be owned by MS and it isn't hosted by MS either.  MS owns their own servers whereas thevanishingpoint.com is hosted on servers owned by rackspace.com

I think it is more likely that some MS developer just found thevanishingpoint thing and put it on his blog or the blog for his development team and thats where you came across it

From Neowin Forums (contains spoilers):

Quote
So far, we know that it's probably a marketing campaign by 42 Entertainment for Microsoft (as the initial teaser image was first seen on the Internet Explorer Development Blog, and the Flash login page is seen connecting to the 42 Entertainment domain). 42 Entertainment were behind the highly successful Halo viral marketing campaign.
