So, who else completed the game?
« on: December 25, 2006, 07:54:51 am »
I did, with no guides or going into edit mode. I thought the gameplay could have been a bit more consistent. Anyone else done it?

I couldn't play much last night, only made it to 2-2. I'll probably do some more today.

Oki, I'm at the zorth prison, and I know what to do, I'm just doing other stuff at the moment.

Edit: Finished it about seventy minutes ago. That was a lovely adventure, although Michal should've left out the last three levels (end thing + eternal joe + the acme machine one) for this version release.

Beat it. I was a little disappointed at the final ending, but Joseph's clone was pretty interesting. Yeah, I also think everything from the Acme machine onward was kinda vestigial and just showing off his coding ability to assume a Zorth. :P

the final levels were way easier than the first two episodes. Besides that I quite enjoyed it, and I beliebve the last stages were more to present some digi-philosophing rather than get you challenged with jump and run stuff.

The two skateboarding (or were there 3, im not sure now) leves were rockage imo. That ACME machine sure was a bit of a showoff, but I guess initially there were some stages planned to make use of these tranformations. However, I was - with some exceptions - well entertained from the beginning to the end.

The negative points are the "blank" graphics that most of the time fit the gameplay, but not always. Also there were some bugs, and you could enter the wall at some places (and no, it was not some bonus stuff).

Id rate this game overall with 7/10. Btw. with a bit more detailed, more texturized gfx, some debugging and bigger chars aswell als modified controls, I could seriously imagine a Soldat like game based on this code. Annaaaa!!1 :P

PS: All those who give up at the first few stages really miss something here ;)

I finished it earlier tonight. Good stuff...new and different and entertaining and I liked the umbrella and hoverbaord and mole and the little tiny shy guys, to begin with.  High Fives to everybody who finished it. Let's start a club.

The end episode was meant to be totally different. You were to become a Zorth, you would walk around the base and all of a sudden all hell would break loose. There would be an attack by some creatures and you would have to defend yourself along with your Zorth troops. A lot of action and finally some shooting :). Also there was meant tobe a big boss, you might get a hint what it would be if you read the files in the terminals.

... but instead, in the appearance of Christmas day, you said "Screw it, I don't have time for this" and allowed friendly fire for Zorths. :P

That's a great idea, though. I hope R's next coder can input that. (And be able to throw grenades & razors! Heh)

Yeah, I beat the game without edit mode or any help thingy...  It's not that hard, just use common sense and observe what happens when you do certain things.

Here's a pretty detailed run-down of the good and bad points of this game, from my perspective. I hope the criticism is appreciated.

0 R Intro
The good: Alice in Wonderland allusions are always welcome onto my hard drive.
The bad: I think the intention was to make Goodco feel very rough and grimy, but it fell far short of that. The heavy cursing of the boss inside and the Dog Nazi banner just kind of turned me off. My first impression of the game was being turned off by the forced Goodco satire. On the one hand, I could see the Goodco bit setting the mood well for the game. The janitor falls through the clouds in a happy, floaty, dreamy state, and it plunged into the grimy hellhole that is Goodco. The way the smokestacks creep into view as you fall is an excellent touch. I think redoing the graphics of that part to make it all dirtier would have helped a lot.
Side notes: Gotta love the techno rave thunderstorm.

1 Episode I: Volcano
The good: It was nice to see the white rabbit again. Reminded me of the G Man in Half-Life.
The bad: The light orbs got stuck too easily. Every time I had to escort light orbs, I moved slower and backtracked a lot - even if I didn't need to - just because I thought the orbs would get stuck.

2 The great comeback
The good: THE DANCING ROOM. I love it. It's like a Quentin Tarantino movie. None of it makes any sense, but it becomes a classic anyway. I find myself memorizing the lines in that scene.
The bad: Jumping from wall to wall to get the light orb into place was hell. You always slip down the wall a bit when you land on one, so that part led to a lot of slipping off into the lava.

3 Don't forget the trampoline
It felt like there was a lot more planned with this level. You only need the trampoline once, for getting back up after the orb is in place.

4 Run, Joseph run
This stands out as one of the few action-packed levels in the game. It was fast, fun, and challenging to complete. Following the rabbit into the exit was a nice touch.

5 Cutscene 'Baloonman'
The good: Excellent scene. I could make the Quentin Tarantino analogy again. I love how the bunny jumped into the lava and the Baloonman commented on it.
The bad: It's spelled 'balloon,' isn't it? Was the misspelling intentional?

6 Episode II: The Swamp
The good: The little disappearing guys are interesting.
The bad: It took some time to figure out I had to chase them into their houses.

7 Little trouble
The good: I liked the riddler.
The bad: Getting the green and purple animals together was a little annoying. That whole process should be made smoother.

8 Saggy balls
Two puzzles, the old man, and the riddler. What more could you ask for? And foreshadowing the guys with guns was a nice touch.

9 Roller-coaster
Another good action level. It was a bit awkward to control. Not too bad, but I think the hoverboard's game mechanics could use some tweaking.

10 Cutscene 'Gustav'
The good: The pink giraffe line worked perfectly to connect the Baloonman to here. That whole section of the game from 'Baloonman' to 'Gustav' felt complete to me. The Madagaskar scene was amazing.
The bad: SELF-REFERENTIAL LINE. When Joseph said "Man, your animation is crappy," it ruined the entire scene. It took me out of the mood and reminded me that it was just a game. Would have been much, much, much better without that little comment.

11 Episode III: Dream
The good: Weird and I love it.
The bad: You can follow the path at the upper left of the level for a long time and just run into a dead end. This might have been a good time to throw the riddler in again.

12-14 .not done
I didn't notice until my second time through that these were unfinished levels. I actually like these exactly as they are. They add to the weird atmosphere created by the Dream episode.

15 Episode IV: Disney Land
Probably unfinished?

16 Miami Vice
More action with nothing to complain about.

18 Episode V: Mines
Nice. I could call this a finished level.
Side note: I didn't notice until the mole level that you could hide in the shadows from the gun dudes. Making that more clear would have helped.

19 Strangler prison
The good: Fun level. One of my favorites.
The bad: Getting the fighting animals to take out the gun dude at the end felt entirely buggy. The fighting animals would push against a block and the gun dude would push back until the fighting animals finally passed through the block and eliminated the other enemy.

20: Dig dug
The good: The mole was fun, and I actually liked how collecting all the gold was pointless. You just get a sarcastic comment if you do. I think it makes a good tongue-in-cheek criticism of games today.
The bad: There is a serious bug in this level where, if the janitor is killed while piloting the mole, the game crashes to desktop. I wouldn't even expect a bug like this in an unfinished beta build of a game, like R is.

21: Episode VI: The Hypothesis, 22: Forget about Joseph, 23: The End
The good: More weirdness, like in the Dream episode. I like.
The bad: I generally dislike video games that reference themselves for the climax. "Joseph, your life is a video game."

24: Episode VII: The Wizard, 25: Eternal Joseph
I love the idea of being able to play as different enemies from the game. It's too bad this Episode wasn't finished.

26: They captured you and placed you in a prison cell with an old man. The end.
Uhhhh.

it crashes when I am piloting the Mole, but after reading the post by LittleViking001, I understand why.

I might finish the game tonight when I have time.

@LV: I liked all of your thoughts. The only thing I disagree on was the janitor's comment on Gustav; I thought that was hilarious ;D And I realized very quickly in Mines that the Zorths had a line of sight. Another thing you forgot to comment was the info in the Zorths' computer terminals; I found those almost even more ridiculously funny than such scenes as the hidden cutscene in The great comeback and the Balloon Man cinematic. Especially, MM's seriousness of it all only enhanced the hilarity.

That Mole bug is weird; for some reason, although I replayed through Dig dug a second time, the Zorth there never managed to reach Joseph and kept getting stuck on the elevator (I later finished him off with the Mole, heh).

I just finished and god damn was that a great game. I'm mad at myself that I dismissed "R" after a couple of levels when I played it in December because it got better and better as I went on.

The sing-along about Madagascar was just lovely, what a stroke of genius that was.

It's a great game hope you like it but it's not that challenging it's just great once you have catch the point of the game the problem with a couple of person is that they dint know how to past from the first level to the other one
R the coolest game ever
