Listen up, maggots.

's been a while since I last made a topic, but I've got some stuff to say.

Been playing Soldat for a while now, have you? You can easily end up on the top of the scoreboard in any public game, aye? You're annoyed by all the hackers running around? Or are you just looking for a new challange?

All that and more can be found on IRC. Rest assured: for Europe and North America, the soldat community isn't on the forums, it's on quakenet. Yes, there are some isolated, small communities like the r/s one, but those are server-oriented.

Read this: http://wiki.soldat.nl/IRC_tutorial

It has everything you need to know. Start coming to #soldat.gather (or if you're American, #sna.gather), and start playing. Soon your definitions of "good" "bad" "hard" and "easy" will be redefined, as well as your image of "Fun".

Come on. Join the real community now.

I already have IRC, although the only channel I use is #soldat.forums
Thanks for the tip, haven't played a gather in a while, should do it more, not to mention clan wars.
Is there an Australian gather channel? My ping is usually crap on American servers.

Good idea, bring all the noobs to IRC. Everyone's gonna love that! Look what happened to this place mate..   :(

Otherwise, I think a little run down on just what the gather 'is' is in order.

#soldat.gather is, oddly enough, a gathering place for the majority of upper-end amatuer to 'pro' players in the community for many a europeans (#sna.gather for the cowboys out west). You'll see a lot of good and well performing clanners in there, all bonding in beautiful harmony with one another in this 'hub' of the generally best players and clans around.

It's purpose however is to play gather-games; organised games between players who request a position in a 3v3 game on a dedicated server. Once 6 players have been decided (all by a program/bot in the IRC channel), they all go and have a jolly good time together for a few rounds until they're done. Then the process starts over again.

It's the closet you'll get to a clan war with particularly hardcore players without the need for a clan and finding another clan to play, which can be a pain to organise i'm sure anyone in a clan knows.

Little tip for anyone new to the gather: do the irc tutorial, and if you're interested in #soldat.gather, check it's website, read it's rules, understand how it works and behave. Don't be afraid to ask questions, but you'll find most answered in the channel's topic and their website.

..not sure on your definition on 'real' community though guv. Do you simply mean that you'll find most of the best organised players around the gather, or that the majority of good players do IRC? 'cos thats quite probably true.
MM; seriously Chakra, stop the fisting
Yes, I'm still alive.

You guys forgot to tell about the quakenet registration thing. Since you need to have that code or whatever it is to get to the actual #soldat.gather.

Some ppl might get lost in this part and give up because it might look too complicate to them.

And from my own experience in there I have to tell you that some players in the gathers are very stubborn and annoying since they expect every player to come there need to be Super skilled Uber players. But to avoid this and the ''noob stamp'' just try your best in every game and dont do anything stupid that you would normally do in a public server. And the gameplay in gathers is very different and more intense than normal. Its actually as if it was an actual clan war without need of joining any clans.

I recommend!

you also forgot about the HUGE mapping community we have there in #soldat.mapping and #soldat.polyworks! ~10 users, whee!

i guess mapping really is rather forum based
I like to have one Martini
Two at the very most
Three I'm under the table
Four I'm under the host

i was about to make a thread here aswell..

recently alot of us irc soldateers decided to try and convert some of you "forum tards"  :P into "proper" players.. i already tried to stress the importance of irc in a previous thread (http://forums.soldat.pl/index.php?topic=9030.0) but got alot of negative replys.. why? idunno.. anyway

yea, irc is where you go the next level of soldat playing, it's far beyond places like this and other forums, as it's just a huge chatroom basically (but alot more sophisticated/organised/better).. playing gathers at #soldat.gather is the best way to become good or pro at soldat, sometimes the team your up against could be the best players from 3 different clans, very hard but the best way to improve!

yea irc looks complex, and it is at 1st just like with any other program, but after a couple days using it then it becomes second nature..

and yes you need to be authed to join #soldat.gather it's easy to do and takes a minute..
stolen from quaknet.org:

Saying 'Hello' to Q

This will create a Q account with the name of the nick you are using at the moment. You do this by using the following command:

/msg Q HELLO youremailaddy@blabla.com youremailaddy@blabla.com

A link where you can obtain your password will be sent to the email address you supplied. You will be required to read and reenter a series of characters before you are given your password. Once you have this password you can then use the AUTH command:

/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH username password

Where username is identical to the nick you used when you said HELLO.

remember once you've done this add this command "/msg Q@CServe.quakenet.org AUTH username password " to your perform (alt+o connect - options - perform write it in the textbox + tick perform on connect) this is so it does it automatically everytime you connect!

with soldat gather, there are two options, normal gathers and gather+, the difference is gather+ only people that have voice (+v) can play, these are normaly the good/pros with a few exceptions, but normal gathers are open for everyone to add.. once you have played a few and you think that your better then the fellow -avers and can play with pros, then sign up for project kane http://gather.soldat.nl/ (in the forums)..

seriously! move to the next stage! come to irc and show yourself, and when your there feel free to highlight me or demonic or any other face you recognise for some help!

you can also find your superhero Ru on irc too so if you don't wanna play gathers do it for the sole purpose of pissing him off instead!!

you've got all what you need to know to do it, so bloody do it!!!
remember i've spent time trying to help you guys, show a bit of respect thanks..

There is another way as well.

Although it is important to use IRC, EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, there is also another option to #soldat.gather

There is #sna.gather for those north american players. Obviously it's a gather based around North American players but Europeans are GREATLY appreciated as well, and last I checked you do not need authorization, so all you need is IRC and u can participate.

#sna.gather

Servers hosted by either GameArena, Xtra Soldat, WGN or AusSoldat.com (or someone else, there are other servers which I have a good ping on but I've no clue who they're hosted by)

No...GameArena is always packed full of hackers....and only a few Aussies would play it...Because most Aussies don't know about Soldat....and those that do....Wouldn't want to compete in something like this without some kind of outcome (Money prizes, or something to that effect).

That's not true, just today I played in GA ctf server, 5 of us were all from the same state, and all had clans, and I know plenty of others. Besides, the whole point of a gather is that you participate a clanwar style battle without actually being in a clan.

If you can go on and lure the aussie community to IRC, so you guys have your own gather down under - well, I can say we'd be glad to help you out. You convince them, we give you any help you might need.

Just a quick (but noobish) question regarding servers, how many servers are needed for a gather channel? Who hosts the servers for #soldat.gather ?

Well, smaller gathers do with 1  server ( #lrs realistic gather and #sna.gather ), bigger ones have more ( like THE #soldat.gather and some national gathers, polish/czeh, but I'm not sure about that ). The servers are payed by Suomip with funding help of some nice fellows, namely DragonSlayer and his brother ramirez. I think Chibi donated the server for #sna.gather.

The main help you'll be needing will be someone who can have an irc-client online 24/7, so he hosts the gather bot itself. You'll also need a bot ofcourse, but that's easy to get, there are quite a few nice coders in the community who are willing to help. You'll also need ****loads of advertising.

Thanks.
I'll probably make a new thread here, at aussoldat.com and numerous other places with the idea, and a list of things which are needed to see how much support we get and if we can get people to do the required things.
