Australian/NZ gather scene
« on: December 29, 2006, 08:35:20 am »
The Idea
It's pretty much an Australian version of the North American gather channel. I'm sure many Aussie and NZ players would appreciate this, as we tend to have crap pings of American and Euro servers.
If you don't know about IRC, or the gather channels read this topic and this topic.
Download IRC here and read this tutorial for more info.
In short, a gather is pretty much a game organised on an IRC channel, where players come in and sign up. Once there are 6 players, a random password is generated and server info is given to the players who then join, and play best of 3 rounds. Once the game is over, the gather bot resets and the whole process starts again.
The purpose of a gather is to simulate a clanwar, for players who aren't in clans or who don't play clanwars often.

What needs to be done?
  • First off we need a server. For hosting, I suggest GameArena, Xtra Soldat or WGN (If anyone knows any others, please post, I know there are others, I just don't know what they're called)
  • An IRC channel is fairly strait forward, I could probably do that myself.
  • A website (possibly with stats) This is the big one, I haven't got much experience with website design, programming, so we need someone to do that.
  • A crapload of advertising - to let as many people as possible know about this project. (Very important)
  • Someone who can run an IRC client 24/7 - to host the gather bot
  • Some to code the gather bot

Any input/suggestions/feedback are all welcome!

There arn't enough of us.
There probably are "enough" of us, but like not everyone would go, and even if ALL Australians/NZ players went, it would be filled with noobs anyway.

As I said, there's no point because there's not enough of us.

I don't think lack of people is the issue, its more-so the fact that server hosts over here are shit, overpriced, and limited. To run a gather, you would need a shell account to run your Ruby/Perl/Whatever script on, then also be allowed to connect to IRC on your hosts ToS (Most aus hosts strictly forbid anything relating to IRC). I have considered trying to start a aussie gather, but the points I just mentioned all got in the way.

I trust you En, therefore I would scrap the idea.   I would like something along those lines though, perhaps we just organise it all over gamearena?

Hmmm, seems likes we're going to have a few problems then. I suppose it doesn't have to be a gather, per say. Just some sort of regular, organised 3 on 3 battle, hosted on an Aussie server.

I can get us a website, and *maybe* host a website....but I think I'll have to get more than 2gig of bandwidth for that.
*sigh*....Is there ANY way this could work?

Hmm...
Someone ask GameArena if they'll make their GameCreate servers to be created via an IRC bot  ;)
I highly doubt that it would ever be possible.

So all we have to do is ALL get ADSL2+ and join in with the USA gather lmao

Having ADSL2+ wont decrease your ping to other countries

increasing the bandwidth doesn't increase transmission speed, just the amount of data that can be transmitted at one time, so as EnEsCe said, it will do nothing but make telstra richer (and T3 shareholders happier)

Or we can just stick to opening the lobby and clicking the server with the lowest ping  ;D

What ping do you get in servers hosted nearby, lets say southern Asia?

I'm on a 256k DSL connection, but I get around 250-300 ping. :(

Yeah thats a pretty good idea, it'll be alot cheaper to rent a server in Indonesia or Papua New Guinea, Fiji or something,
and i REALLY doubt that you would get 250-300 ping on a server in PNG,
I would think ppl in NT and QLD would get VERY low ping there

I don't think lack of people is the issue, its more-so the fact that server hosts over here are ****, overpriced, and limited. Having the server offshore would solve ALL those problems, but it has to be in Indonesia or PNG to work well...

In my opinion that would work really well...
...But what do i know...

*bump* (nothing in the rules against double posting  ;D)

does anyone agree with me, and even if its possible, can we rent a server in PNG??? Im not sure whether they have many free 100mb servers ready to host Soldat 24/7...

EDIT:
DAMN this forum just adds my posts underneath my other one  :-[, anyway it still bumped it to the top of the list  :P

LIES. Anyway I think there's potential in this idea, I can book servers myself through GameArena (for free) It just wouldn't be as frequent as the Euro or NA gathers (which are 24/7 if I'm not mistaken).

So yeah.

I don't see why GameArena doesn't already do some kind of gather...I mean...they have competitions for other games, and Soldat is one of the most popular freeware/shareware games in the world....

The gather sounds like a good idea but..
There aren't any good aussie servers. Theres always hackers in them and the admins are not around frequently enough to ban them. And using the Gamearena Bookings for your idea just wouldn't work.
You probably will have to ?rent? your own server for this.

One day... There will be a good aussie server
...I hope
