Public Warnings.
« on: January 04, 2007, 06:00:28 pm »
Us moderators have a nice list of everyone on these forums who has been warned and we felt it would be nice to share this list with you.  Via a little public humiliation.

Starting in the near future, you'll begin to see warning levels under each forumer's name.  This'll serve as a constant reminder for rule-breakers to mend their ways...it'll also mean that us mods won't have to look at the warning list before we dole out warnings, so we might end up being a bit stricter than we intended.

If you happen to break the rules and receive a warning, don't complain about it.  There may be times when warnings seem unfair, but keep in mind that we often assess people's posts as a whole before giving out warnings and that there may be drastically different reasons why one person gets a warning as opposed to another.  We know what we're doing and all we expect is that you do your best to be normal, respectful people.

And now a quick reminder of what the warning system is:
First Warning: This is just a slap on the wrist.  If the person's behavior improves, it might disappear in time.
Second Warning: We'll begin to watch the offender more closely.
Third Warning: Temporary ban.  Last Warning.
Permanent Ban: A severe fisting.

There are exceptions to the system: large-scale fubars will be met with an immediate ban or several skipped levels, and veteran members will almost always be treated with more leniency that some kid who has only been on the forums for 15 minutes.  Why?  Because this is a community, not a government.  And we'll treat established members better than relative strangers.

Cliff's Notes:
  • Warning levels will now be public, shown right under your names.
  • If you are warned, do not complain about it.  We'll keep it fair.
  • Offenders have four strikes until they're banned.  Considering how few people are ever banned from these forums, it must be relatively easy to follow the rules.
The Rules, in case you forgot them.

I have a question. So, the warning logs are permanent? Like, is there any way we can get a warn removed for good behavior in the future? Is it like one warning is there forever, and if we break a little rule 2 years later we still get a second warning? I know I was warned once for something really petty while ago, and I did take it maturely, (Like, I didn't PM a mod saying 'ZOMG DIS WUZ UNFARE!1!11seven!1forty-two!1" but can they ever be taken away, at all?

Yep.  We consider removing warnings every once in a while.  We don't tell anyone when we do it, we just sort of remove the warning and hope for the best.  It takes quite a bit of good behavior to get rid of one, and it's especially difficult if you have more than one warning.

Also, we really appreciate it when you take a warning gracefully.  It's nice to hear that people understand what we're doing instead of receiving messages of hate.  Especially because that means we'll have to go through the trouble of warning you again, which is a pain in the ass.

How about a warning reduces 10 points in karma?  When shall we expect to see this new feature?

Well okay then. :) Thanks a whole bunch, man.

I think the Karma system is already abused as it is, (Random smites without warning or knowing at least which post it was for are certainly irritating) and when someone gets -10 for a warning, then everyone will automatically begin smiting them just for that. :|

Perhaps when people smite or applaud you they must leave a comment? Then again, people would just spam the comment space so they can smite you for whatever petty reason they believe is a good reason. ;_;

sounds pretty sweet, as long as i dont have a big red sticker tagged onto my name,

and any changes to the karma would probably be bad. (exept maybe removing the smite *hint*)

When shall we expect to see this new feature?

When we get around to it.  We're pretty lazy people.

We have to do it? I am sure we can get some illegals to do it for us...

Do you lower your warning level by driving into the floating star pick-up? :P

No, that might make people think that people with low karma are bad guys that have warnings to their name (although you could say thats what karma is for anyway)

I'd like there to be some sign under their name to show that they are an evil doer, and not make any change to karma because at the moment karma is purely a user thing that has not got alot of credibility; If you give negative karma officially by mods, that would give some credibility to karma when its still mainly a user thing.

Well, for the most part, yeah. :P I think I've been smited several times for no apparant reason. I don't post as much as I used to, I'm respectful, I don't spam or annoy anyone, yet it's still in the negatives. Alas...

And I'm all for the public warning feature underneath our names. I think it will stick more in peoples' heads that they need to shape up if they have those displayed.

^ Just to make sure I don't get warned for going off-topic too much. :)

You kind of have to have an attitude here. :P No one really cares if you're kind and caring all the time, lacking a personality really... even aside from that, it's incredibly difficult to recover from a negative karma; when people see that, they just mindlessly continue to subtract, I've observed (I would say downright impossible even, if there weren't very rare people who actually managed to recover from it)

nah once you reach -20 it's downhill from there (I know because i used to get applauded more at about -15 then all of a sudden after -20 i hardly ever got applauded)
or maybe it's because I started using avatars which people dislike lol
actually i kinda made a study; an avatar helps you in terms of how much you get smitten because if people see some crappy avatar they tend to smite more

Again with the hemo karma discussion. Oddly enough, those who I smited have really low karma, and those who I applauded have relatively high karma ( above ZERO OMG ). "Conspiracy afoot?"

Bah. I applaud almost everyone I see, even people who directly insult me or who I know nothing about, since I know their karma's just going to drop in the near future anyways :P

I think my karma drops more when I am inactive, because i got banned from the computer for a week and I get back to the forums and found my karma -10 from the week before.

Karma hurts, as much as you ignore it it is like, wow, people here hate me because I have negative karma that never goes up, even relatively cool to respectful participating members have like -50 karma, it really does not show how helpful a person is, it just shows how annoying bored people think that they are.

Don't change karma to interact with the warning system, it wouldn't change anything for the better.

I would like to see how many members are in "the red zone" with the warning system.

Edit: I just saw [person] who had a warning level instead of the rank or whatever! HORAY

RACIST OMG I DEMAND JUSTICE.

But seriously, there's hardly enough tomfoolery to warrant the implementation of this system. You have like, what, a few people each week that step slightly out of line? Maybe a few people every 2 weeks that gets banned? This place is a nursery compared to Facepunch, i don't know why you guys are cracking down so hard.

We're not cracking down at all. We're just making warnings more public and making our jobs slightly easier in the long run.
