Weapon Outlines?
« on: January 04, 2007, 11:20:57 pm »
I am currently making a mod whose objective is to mod all of the soldat weapons...Ā  Kind of like Soldat Evolved...

The problem I am encountering is that of the black outlines around the guns...
When I put the put lines onto the guns, it makes some of them look bulky and stupid.
When I take an outline off, they can be hard to see against certain backgrounds...

What is your opinion?Ā  Any suggestions or ways to improve contrast against backgrounds would be helpful.

This occurs with guns that have spaces in and around their figure,
in this case, the Heckler and Koch G36C and the Steyr AUG A2 (Names aren't changed I know)

Interface Files  (Just for fun)

You have to incorporate the outline into the design of the gun. Look at PapaSurf's weapons if you don't get it. Also, make them a larger as to allow for more detail, and try less of a bland approach and add some contrast (the HK).

How much bigger you figure I should make the pics, like 1-2 pixels, or maybe something more extreme, like 3-5 pixels?

Also do you have any links to some of Papa's mods that do what you said?  I would like to see examples, cause I'm not sure I know what you mean.\

You could try not using black. Do it the Paper Mario way, use an outline that's a darker version of it's innards. Also, an easier way to do this is to double the gun's size, put a border around it, then shrink it back to normal ;)

The preferred outcome of war is peace. Ironic, huh ?

I never tried either of those...

but I have used a black outline...
And this is the result.  I'm relatively happy with it, what do you guys think?

I dont recommend doing that enlarge shrinkin thing. A lot of the times enlarging and/or shrinking images will result in lost color uneven lines etc. The outline is just as important as the guns shading themselves. On some parts you can do what ill call a reverse outline to give off a different effect (such as chrome trim). The best advice I think anyone could give you is just to practice.

The 'enlarge shrinkin' thing is perfectaly acceptable when done in a high-quality program such as the Gimp. Besides, with a straight 1:2 conversion, all the details will remain the same :)
