ASP(Another Soldat Project)
« on: January 15, 2007, 03:10:53 am »
Hi,

i've seen alot of "let's make a soldat game in 3D", and it turns out that none, well...has been successful, but i'm gonna make a soldat-type game in 3D, a FPS shooter? anyone?

and yes, i have started the coding before i even wrote this, it will be in C++ and in OPENGL.

here are some jobs:
Graphics - I need a model designer, anyone just post here if u want to me in it.
website - a person good with html and/or php knowledge.

i might need some C++ programmers, but we'll find that out in next week or so.

I'll upload a video tomorrow, or tonight, and release a demo in the next 2 weeks(depending on how fast i get people).

any questions just ask.

Why do you people insist on trying to steal Soldat's thunder?

Hi EnEsCE,

i don't want to steal "soldat's thunder"(i don't know what it means anyway), but i've seen people post up on these kind of projects, and does not get that far.

I can't model (well, maybe a box >_>), but I'm decent when it comes to textures. If you get a guy who can model and could give me the Unwrapped texture, I'd gladly work on this for you.

Do let me know if you need me, either PM me here, or add me to MSN with the address specified in my profile.

What kind of engine does this project use? I've been looking after DarkPlaces engine. A modified Quake1 engine.

Nexuiz uses the engine, and I've been thinking that it would not be THAT impossible to port it to Soldatish game, 3D of course. Mainly what I've been thinking about would be jets and some kind of weaponary, and very tough Soldat's flying around in odd places. :P

I'm pretty sure he wants to create his own game engine, am I right ?

And on a similar topic, why doesn't someone make a better Gunster ? Oh yeah, they already have and it's called Soldat people. Stop trying to steal it's popularity.

Well, creating your very own 3D engine with decent graphics stuff isn't very easy these days. There are plenty of free, open source ones based on Quake engines. Why not to use one?

Just to mention that CS 1.6 is based on Quake1 engine. Half-Life uses modified Quake 1 engine, and CS uses HL engine.

Also, just see pics of e.g. Nexuiz, alot of NICE graphics stuff can be achieved. :)

To be entirely correct, Half-Life 1 uses a heavily modified Quake 1 engine named 'Gold Src', which is much different than quake's. Half-Life 2; however, uses the Source engine, an entirely in-house developed game engine.

This is why it's relevent : to make a modification on the Quake 1 engine took Valve two and a half years. For twelve people.

It took them six to produce their own with fifteen people. So do yourself a favor man, and either do a mod or use Gamemaker. Single-handedly tackling a project like this is huge :)

Game Maker is horrible, please don't think about using it Scope.

Besides, even if he didn't go with C++, there are other alternatives with 3D capability. Blitz3D for example, which doesn't have the horrid limitations and performance of Game Maker.

By saying Game Maker I was implying he tackle an easier, 2d game first. No offence intended if I'm wrong, but I think that Scope's a smidgen too young to be learning anything more complicated than simple scripting and Basic. Again, no offence intended if I'm wrong.

Pretty much right. Except that start directly with C++. By starting with basic, and getting used to it, it is pretty hard to change to C++ or such. Pointers, Classes, 100% new syntax, everything. The change ain't easy. I've been doing with Basics soon for 7 years, and even thinking about converting integer to string by some function, using pointers, including classes, with somewhat weird syntax gives me headache. :(

I agree with Clawbug.
The easiest way is for you to start out with C++.
If that, for some reason, is not an option, I would go with Java.
Those two languages are a lot alike.
