Feedback: Soldat Enhanced
« on: November 13, 2007, 03:25:16 pm »
I know SE is very popular with alot of you... it's had almost 700 downloads since its release in March. I hope you will be pleased to know that I am going to develop SE into a series of seperate mods (which I will not yet reveal) and eventually that will add up to one big mod with a configurator and a formidable arsenal of weapons from all the installments I will be making.

Firstly I need some feedback as to problems with SE I would definately like to know what people thought of sounds such as the health pickup, the shellshock sound (hum.wav) and the hit/death sounds. I'd also like to know what people thought of the interface (mainly the icons)... and any other feedback you can give me is great too. Please note, one thing I don't want to hear is about how big the weapons look, and I will ignore any comments on the subject.

Here's a list of things I've already fixed from my own criticism:
- Knife too big (I now agree with this and have remade it about 70% smaller)
- Missing Cluster Grenade icon
- Jet noise is too loud
- Spas12 looks like crap
- HK Mk.23 looks like crap (I have totally redesigned this now and it looks better)

One thing I'd also like to know is which of these predator kits you prefer:

Probably the first one. And one problem with the mod was that the weapons didn't have a complete black outline.

Can I ask what's wrong with not having a a complete black outline?

I felt it kind of made the guns look.. smoother.. also in some cases due to the size of them it was difficult to have solid black outline.

I do not need suggestions as to what weapons to make in the future.

I just want to know the good and bad points of my mod so I can improve it.

Without a black outline weapons look worse ingame. If it's possible to avoid this using transparency, (which I'd suggest testing out btw) then people should stop using black outlines altogether.

I did try using transparency /.png format but it seems to lose quality in the death console for some reason... at least I think so..

Outlines are very important, they can make corners seem sharp or smooth. So you should try to put an outline on everything, people prefer that. It also makes them stand out from the background.
Or, you can do the cop-out alpha-shaded outline / shadow. If you're really ambitious, you could do a normal outline with partial transparency in key places.

Okay, onto specific criticisms.
I think you need to work on your shapes more. Generally, they're pretty good, but you've got some awkwardness in my opinion on the Desert Eagle grip and the AK-74 magazine.
When you post a preview image, either give it a transparent background like I did for Neo-Arsenal Cut-Out or a non-black background like Dairy does. Makes it easier for people to get the general feeling of what it will look like in game. Also shows the outline.

On another note, I really should do some tests about the quality of images. I'll test it with .bmp, .png with green background and .png with alpha transparent background.

Okay thanks.

Also if anybody could get back to me on those specific sounds I outlined, that would be great.

Firstly I need some feedback as to problems with SE I would definately like to know what people thought of sounds such as the health pickup, the shellshock sound (hum.wav) and the hit/death sounds.

Since my last mod I've started getting even more innovative with my sound effects and pretty much from now on what you can expect to hear is higher quality stereo sampled effects (as apposed to mono sampled) but I think I'll confine this just to the weapon sounds, because it does take up more memory.

Mostly... 1st pickup because more fit into SE theme. If you going develop SE into series seperate mods, I want see you in horrior themed production if you decide to make every seperate mod in different theme. ;) Interface from SE is already classic/legendary how modded int can be unforgetable as the one and easy to remember in later mods, I think is good but can be little improved, not so much because is almost perfect already and still better than Reborn's remake (colors, outline, bars design). Hit'n'death sounds are really better natural than default (close to real life pain and agony but some are... hmm in the same time as good as ugly or something like that, health pickup is great but shellshock sound is like last hour of life or death bells, daaark but can be more terrible like devil's laugh, dead voices in mind or strange symphony of deadth (strange melodic noise before you die or near death).

Thanks.. I won't be using "themes" as such (as in horror, sci-fi etc) what I will be doing is having different sets of weapons (rifles, shotguns, handguns, military) stuff like that and then when I feel I have amassed enough (or when I feel it's time to start modding link dead instead) I will make a huge mod out of them all, putting them together.

As for the handgun one.. I started it a few months ago (after stopping working on my shotgun mod to rethink a few things) and after finishing the Predator mod I set back to work on it... It's pretty much 100% finished.. but I'm going to redo the outlines and make them more realistic/natural and not thick black.. I'm also going to remake the Enhanced interface (keeping the same basic design, but making it nicer with transparrency)

Anyway here's the first installment .. it's a sort of handguns and compact weapons mod as you can see I've experimented with the outlining on the Beretta 93 and I think it looks better with this new outline which I will use on all the weapons.

(note: sorry for the quality loss from jpeg conversion)
