That sounds arguably as fun as my usual summer of haning out doing nothing and going to LAN parties. Mine is probably cheaper, so yay home. Hope you have fun and are safe.

I and a friend of mine (the same one who went to Europe with me last summer) just made rough cost estimates for this trip.

A round trip to and from Bulgaria cost us around $900 last summer.
I assume train tickets will rise slightly in price, so let's say $450 for a 22-day pass.
And another minimum of $600 to spend freely.

That's roughly $2000 for that trip. Which not bad at all, considering the tour company's equivalent. Here's hoping that I'll be able to come up with that amount of money quite easily by summer 2010.

Here's also hoping that my girlfriend will still be around during that time, so I can bring her, too. Three of us would be joining you fellows.

Uhm... it's 2008, atleast for a couple of weeks. Next summer would be 2009, that's when we're going: 2010 is so far in the future that I won't even bet that I'll still have legs. Or lungs. Or an apendix.

None the less, the date on which I see your naked chest FOR REALZ approaches.

XD Well, damn. That shits all over my plans, basically. As I'm not sure if I'll be able to come up with that kind of money by summer '09.

Still, I'll try.

Hey man me and my mates are planning on a europe tour as well. The rough plan at the moment is a vague loop from Paris or Amsterdam finishing back in Paris. On the way hitting Berlin (or German alternatives), Prague, Budapest, Venice and Geneva. Same interrailing business for late July I think. Probably 2.5-3 weeks long. Haven't really considered soldaty meetups as such. If you are in the area sure. Others would be PQ in amsterdam (and moirae?) and random germans. Toumaz and n2j3 are a bit out of the way unfortunately.

Venice and Milan aren't really great spots in italy. Down south is better.

Alright me and many mates are in the process of planning ours.

http://www.wayfaring.com/maps/show/55339  is a wee thing of what we have so far.

Essentially that's Flying to Amsterdam on the 27th then on to Berlin after a few days. From there to Prague and then back into Bavaria. Down to Venice next and across to Lake Garda and then Geneva. After that, down to the Nice area probably, up to Paris and fly back home. Hostels with maybe the odd tenting here and there.

If anyone has any recommendations about areas or whatnot (meeting Moirae and PQ) and ohmahgad somewhere to stay for free get in touch. The time in the South of France is the vaguest on where to go and any ideas from locals for special things to do would be welcome. Oh, I'll be turning 18 sometime around the geneva mark as well.

Input here or IRC if you wish local europeans. :>

Missed this thread the first time around.

If you have room for another friend along the way, Demonic, I'd be down. As long as I don't find a research job out of the country, at least.

Update of great justice:

My friends are still quite up to the task, and we're concrete on this. If all else fails, I'll be hiking to save money, and using couchsurf.com to save even more. Since the whole thing will be pretty chaotic with no rigid schedule what-so-ever, anyone can tag along (this is me thinly veiling my raging boner on the thought of you coming Vij). If we go north enough, a beer or two would be possible with echo. I'm guessing n00bface can summon money out of his magic hat of awesome, and last time he was pretty adamant about coming with us all the way. Bonus motel hopping.

Geoffrey, when it draws near, I'm guessing we'll exchange numbers, or somehow get notes across, so in case our paths cross, we'd meet. The thing is, we're still not sure when we'll be going, but probs are it's going to be August.

Dairy, I've been to Slovakia numerous times, understandably at the parts where there are many hungarians. My grandfather originates from there, so to me it's special - and for the other part, we've had some bad experiences with certain slovaks and their urges to stab us dead. So no slovakia this time around. (:

If you're still considering it, I'd be much willing to tag along on a potential Berlin-Amsterdam-Paris-Barcelona trip? We're talking summer '09, right?
I fucking miss all you cunts!

Well we are definitely getting into amsterdam for the 27th of july and getting 22 days unlimited. Results day on 20th of august so flying back from paris before that. I'm going with plenty of mates so that route we are deciding on won't be very changeable but if we cross paths then ahoy!

Howdy, I'm going on a trip to several festivals in several locations in europe in the near months and I was wondering how does one without a european citizenship obtain an InterRail ticket?

..If that's possible at all.

From the InterRail FAQ:

"Am I eligible for an InterRail Pass?

To qualify for an InterRail Pass, you must be normally resident in one of the participating European countries ie: Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark (including Faroer Islands but excluding Greenland), Eire, Estonia, Finland, FYR Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (including Melilla, Ceuta and Canary Islands), Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom (including Gibraltar), Vatican City.

Residents of Russian Federation, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Algeria or Tunisia also qualify to buy an InterRail.

You must be resident in one of the aforementioned European countries for a period of at least 6 months immediately preceeding the first day of the validity of the pass."

So unless you have an EU citizenship under your sleeve, I'm afraid you're screwed mate. Hiking works good though, it's not like you are the main target for roadtrip rapes, and just tell stories about your unhealthy lifestyle so they won't consider cutting your kidneys out either.

Which festivals though?

Weren't you having money problems with the whole country bankrupt thing?
Interail ticket sounds expensive.

I will say that if you get a chance to go to Hungary or Switzerland, take them.  Those two countries were by far the highlights of my trip.

I lived in Switzerland for 4-5 years. The best place to be period.
