Realistic Grenades

Would it be possible to make grenades explode only on a timer and not on contact with another player/explosive polygon? small change but would really alter gameplay in realistic mode

It would open gameplay up to focus more on aim and skill and make things more interesting and i'm mostly thinking along the lines of realistic mode anyway. And besides it can always be an option that can be turned on/off.

You can try with some mod/scripting, but there won't be anything like on/off button in official Soldat. It would be awfully looking.

Realistic is really about skill in shooting because of recoil. Nades aren't making game less interesting. In fact, nades make it more interesting because of skill you need to achive to use them usefully.

Seriously, I don't see a point in your suggestion.

I liked the timer grenades in Quake 2 and I think I would like it in Soldat as well. This would change gameplay a lot, but it wouldn't be a bad change of gameplay, just more challenging.

One thing I think the suggestion has to add is that the grenade won't be thrown untill you release the button.

I have no idea what you think i mean here? I'm talking about an option for this which would be set server side. Like bonuses etc.

People i've spoken to seem to think it's a good idea and would be interested in seeing it in action.

On some ttw maybe it would be not so bad. But it won't be more popular anywhere else because of jetshoes you can use to avoid death by nades like that.

I think this would make sense if you could delay the throw, so the timer would start and experienced users would be able to time it, resulting in something that could be more effective(but less time efficient) than the traditional grenades. The timer would have to be rather short.

why timer? make it explode after certain amount of time! sounds pretty cool as an addition, i would like to see it as an option to bring some variety to the game/servers

Being able to hold the grenade until it explodes would make it useful in mid air fights when otherwice it would just fly pass your enemies uselessly.
Anyone remember/know the "Mid-air Nade jumps" that was founded in Freestyle servers? Now imagine killing someone with the same principle.

I believe we we're discussing about 'timer' as 'certain amount of time'.

Yeah i meant timer as in it explodes after 3 seconds from you release it.

If your thinking of worms style grenades then thats also cool but not what i mean here :D

My guess is MM added explode on contact because it supports the fast paced gameplay Soldat was made for.
I think nades can be quite annoying but I'm not sure how timed nades would work out.

So:

I didn't check out how it works code wise. Also why should the timed grenades go though players? Shouldn't they hit you and fall down instead?

Explode-on-contact grenades must stay as they're a very important part of what makes Soldat so fast paced. You can nade people in mid-air, you can boost yourself off colliders and players, boost your teammates, and possibly do some other tricks I don't know of yet. Simple timer-based grenades wouldn't allow many of such things and would make grenades very easy to dodge.
I do understand why you want it implemented though. Timer based grenades make more sense in terms of realism, they'd be more challenging to use and would require a more tactical approach. Also colliders will serve as an actual cover instead of bullets-only cover. I think it would suit Trenchwars the best, but who knows, maybe it won't be too bad in other gamemodes too. IMHO it should be added as a server setting so we can see how it ends up working in-game.

Fast pacedness wouldn't disappear anywhere. If there were to be timers and the grenades would be thrown on the release of the button/when you want within the limitations of the timer, you could still nade people in mid-air, you can boost yourself off anything (off from midair too), boost your team mates, blow yourself up and perform tricks in the similiar fashion. It would make no harm to have this kind of version of the grenade implemented in the game as well as an option.

Sounds silly to have grenades bounce off from colliders.

Oh, if the timer starts while you're still holding a grenade - then boosting and mid-air kills shouldn't be much of a problem (with enough practice). In that case I have nothing against this.

Nades shouldn't bounce off soldiers though - teammates can get in the way and mess up your throw.
