Avatars?
« on: October 18, 2009, 02:34:25 pm »
These songs inspired me to make these. They could be used/edited as avatars, or technically anything. I was actually house cleaning yesterday, and wanted some new background music (I'm lacking new tunes), so I used some of ScHall's electronica music and made multiple versions for cover art to use on my little Zune.

The original:

Then different versions of above...

I like pretty much all of them, except #1 (not a fan of filters..).
How did you make the original one?

I was going for a specific look. I wanted something that had an electric-esque feeling. So I screwed around with Gimp's gradient flares and decided to layer two on top of each other, then tossed a "sodel edge" on it to get the original. I used the edge's default settings, but messed around with the flares to even 'em out.

From there, I went a little crazy with a variety of different effects and filters. There's a few more versions. These were just my favorite.

It reminds me "Vortex" from iPod games.
"Prudence is good when pulling the trigger on a heavy firearm. It's all or nothing. So is life, wouldn't you say?"

--how I made the original version--

With the last one...

I know I did something to make the original version black and white, but in a very round-a-bout way. I then proceeded to "color to alpha" all the black (to remove the black background for the transparent effect).

Afterward, since the image was so dim from removing all of the black in the image -- under the Filters tab in Gimp, then in Combine -- I used the "depth merge" effect (essentially layering duplicates of the image onto itself) to make it bolder and darker.
