Votekick reason blacklist
« on: November 17, 2009, 12:12:07 am »
Votekick abuse is very common in public servers nowadays (like that's something new to most of you ;P), but not much has been done to prevent that.

As a step to fighting with votekick abuse, I suggest having a blacklist of words that shouldn't be allowed when typing a reason.
Words like "noob", "***", "******", and other discriminative or unreasonable "reasons" for votekick (and their foreign translations). If one of these words is found in "reason" - the vote shouldn't be cast and the voter shouldn't be allowed to vote for several (5?) minutes.

Even if there is a good reason, it should still be stated properly. For example, "hacker" instead of "noob hacker ***". With that votes should finally become a little more polite and reasonable.

lol, completely useless. If there was a blacklist, people will just use different words.

Quoted for truth. It's just like having some kind of word censor.

My thoughts exactly. That, or they'll just use spaces or something.

Your idea is useless indeed.
But...

I always wondered why admins (via ARSSE, ESA etc.) can't see who started vote, who has been voted (even if vote failed) and with what reason.
It would be totally nice to have opportunity to stop, warn, punish "random voters".

Or just add such event to ScriptCore - it would be enough.

Thoughts? Or maybe it has been already suggested...

I realize that it's easy to go around this kind of filtering system, but not everybody (especially new players) will be aware of the blacklist, so it should prevent at least SOME cases of abuse.

If not that then I don't know how else the situation can be improved. :/

Ze sollution.... Should've been done millenia ago.
That, or indeed simply logging vote-kicks and reasons, so if anyone comes complaining at least the admins can verify abuse of the vote-kick system. Now I constantly have to remind players to make screenshots and for some reason almost nobody ever does that.

I doubt that script-based filter will do any good. Well... it will, but only on the servers where this script is installed (which probably won't be too many of them).

Although even scripted blacklist is better than nothing.

If most common "work-arounds" are included in the blacklist ("no ob, n00b, nab, etc") it would simply make it not worth experimenting. After each such experiment voter won't be able to vote for a few minutes, so it'd be more worth to just state a proper reason than to try and trick the filter, fail and get another few minutes of not-voting.

There's no reason to "do something" for such votes. Grow a pair and join another server or stop playing. Problem(s) solved!

"Grow a pair or stop playing" - a completely ignorant response from someone who has never been (or doesn't want to admit he has) in such situations before.

I'm afraid not everyone will want to just stop playing on their favorite server just because of someone's lack of brains. Also keep in mind, that for some people number of servers where they can play is very limited.

I doubt that script-based filter will do any good.

I also doubt that'll work, but I was more thinking about dis-allowing certain players to use the vote-kick system. Or at least add rules as 'if your vote doesn't get mass-f12-ed, you can't use the system for another hour or so', IMO that would definitely diminish the number of idiotic vote-kicks and still make the system usable against real cheaters.

Anyway I'd like to blacklist players, not 'reasons'.

I'm just telling you the truth. I find people who are crying about rude people kicking their butts in a public servers rather hilarious.

I have been in the same situation many, many times. I just don't care, it's really not such a big deal as you think it is. If you get kicked, you should either find another server, start playing against bots or stop playing. It's that simple. (I'd suggest the last option since there's way more useful things to do, really)

Also, stupid votekicking doesn't necessarily mean the voter lacks brains, it's often one's way to have a good time. I could say the people who voted you are laughing their asses off when they see this topic. Sorry.

Like I said, "finding another server" or "playing with bots" won't work for everyone because:
Other servers are laggy/empty/full/not the gamemode you want/no friends playing/you get voted out of there too.
Assume this for a second: maybe it's a bigger deal for other players than you think it is.

Stopping to play (and maybe using computer as well) is a good suggestion, but unfortunately not everyone has a life. ;|

Nah, waste of time to implement this.
Cause they'll always come up with something new, and maybe even start typing random letters once they've become real desperate. Then what?

I say we add some kind of server tool that saves vote kick reasons in a log file (with other details like players involved and the time/date), just for the lulz

Cool.

Beside stupid and silly votekicks with completely random reasons...
I suggested it because at modified (mostly RPG) servers random (or just mean) people votekick notable players just because they use "skills/spells".
As admin I regret the fact that I just can't help it without knowledge about such event.

It's also good way to prevent (as with future punishments) server overtakers.
For example some clans which don't have own server used to invade other servers and just votekick everyone who join. And that's just not cool.
