Movie-making software suggestions [please]
« on: May 04, 2010, 11:22:07 pm »
I am getting paid $30 dollars to take photos and create a "video" presentation. I've taken the photos; now it's time for the presentation. The last 2 videos I cranked out were with the meager Windows Movie Maker for XP. Yes, the program sucks, but I did pretty damn good for what I had to work with.

So, months have passed, the movie maker for Windows 7 sucks, and now it's time to ask SF for suggestions. Hit me.

Unfortunately there is no free video editors at all... Even those developed for linux completely suck compared to MS Movie Maker... So basically there are two alternatives: Sony Vegas (which is simpler chinese s**t) and Adobe products: Premier and After Effects (somewhat advanced indian s**t). Both are quite expensive (don't forget about plugins, most of them also cast a lot of money) and full of bugs. Learning how to use them takes some time, however there are plenty of tutorials around the internets.
You may also need additional video converting/editing tools such as AviSynth (MUSTHAVE), VirtualDub (it's not a video editor, basically you can use it only to cut, merge and reencode video streams with help of AviSynth), various video-audio codecs (i'll recommend Lagarith as lossless codec to prepare video for editing and exporting from the editor, x264 and Nero AAC to encode final movie), MeGUI - a handy GUI to make encoding and muxing stuff easier...

I'd suggest Adobie Premiere CS3/4. It's the best you can get for the PC.

Avid is the most professionally recognised for the PC but it's much more complicated. You'd think that you'll get some more advanced tools/capability in return for all its complex ways, but no, you'll just realise that the developers were retarded. Its "professionally recognised" status only exists because it has been in the industry for so long. Final Cut Pro is rapidly overtaking it in that field.

Final Cut Pro is the best out of the two in terms of both capability and user-friendlyness, but that's only for the Mac (and the only thing Macs are good for  :P).

I use Premiere CS4, which for me was...eh...freeware.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

Eh.. if you're trying to make a simple slideshow - how about PowerPoint? It's not exactly video, but for a picture presentation it might work.. though I haven't worked with it much, so I'm not too sure how much it can offer.

As for actual video editors - I can only suggest Adobe Premiere on PC, or FinalCut Pro on Mac. Unfortunately they're not free, but you could at least try trial versions for now. BTW, to me Premiere didn't seem any more complicated than FinalCut. On contrary - some things (like graph editor) seemed more confusing in FinalCut than in Premiere.

I've thought about PowerPoint. It doesn't quite cut it for this one.

You could also try pinnacle. You can download a free 1-month trial.
It is quite simple but can do any basic things you want to do.

My favorite free video editing software would have to be bittorrent.
I attend grammar school, last grade, and ignorance is all around me. Well, good for them. Ignorance is bliss.

It really depends Black, what is this video presentation for?

Giving a church an example of what type of work is done for this particular soup kitchen. A video presentation is more practical in this scenario, and anyway I don't care to talk "practicalities"

I'll give the 14 day trial of Pinnacle a shot. I'd probly be better off with trying Premiere or FinalCut, but they're more than I need atm.

By the way, this presentation is a side project, not supar serious. I'm using it to see if I really like doing this stuff.
