Thanks. I managed to find some tweaking commands and configs, so I managed to boost my FPS a bit. It's still a bit sluggish, so I get a feeling it's not the lighting and particles that make the game lag. Maybe it's fail coding, because even with uber-uglified graphics the increase in FPS is still not as big as I would expect. :/

gonna have to mess with it some more...


upd: WOOT! I found the problem. For some reason texture filtering keeps setting itself to Trilinear each time I restart the game, so I have to set it back to Bilinear. Another FPS boost was achieved by DISABLING multicore rendering (which is weird, since i have dual core CPU, so shouldn't it work faster with it enabled?). I also used some of those console commands to disable all gibs and some unnecessary particles. Now alien swarm runs at playable speed and still looks decent. <3

besides the mentioned annoying difficulties to play steam games when your internet connection is out, i also had problems with adding friends. I had friend requests in 'friends box/window', i had accept/ignore/something buttons and everytime i clicked accept, some new window was popping up telling me nothing. I had to go to steam's window, click community category,  then something and accept the friends from there. Why couldn't i do it from the friends box? that's a mystery to me.

Having problems adding friends too. :/ Says I need to have games in my steam account (which I do) to use "some of steam's features". I'd love to add some of the SF'ers to my friends list so we can play Alien Swarm together. :/

Yeah I have that problem too, I think it's because I haven't actually PURCHASED a steam game yet... all the stuff I have on there are freebies    I don't have any grief to spread about Steam though

It's not the same comparing to 2 left clicks. And I don't have any problems with anything there.

You can connect through IP.. In Steam (program): View -> Servers -> Favorites -> RMB -> Add server by IP address

Best way to search a servers is - Steam -> View -> Servers .. its much better way than finding something ingame..

(e.g.: Latency <150, Europe, Server not full & Has users playing)

Also for those who would like to start a server:
1) Forward UDP 27015
2) Create the game (in Alien Swarm)
3) Once you're in lobby, where you can choose your stuff, ESC -> Options -> Keyboard/Mouse -> Tick "Use developers console" and press "Done".. get back in lobby after this
4) Open up console (default "~") and type in:
  sv_lan 0
  heartbeat
5) You're done

(once you will do these steps, you will not need to repeat it for next time you will want to create a server)

Also I've found a very useful command for console "kick <playername>"..


Do you want to know probably best (and way easiest that other) weapon combination, which have run few players solo insane at many maps already? Chainsaw + Flamethrower. But probably you do know this already.

For those, who doesn't know, there's an IRC channel for Alien Swarm at QuakeNet.. it is #alienswarm (that wasn't hard, was it?)



I've noticed I can use Steam group chat just that day, when I've registered at Steam cause of ASV, 20th July. Sad that we can't chat there now so.

Oh, I didn't notice this thread until now. Did any of you beat the second mission on Insane? I was close to the end (the elevator docked and we had to go straight to the exit) but suddently shipload of Swarm spawns out of nowhere and me and my friends die in about 5 seconds. Parasites are damn annoying on Insane.

Is there a Soldatforums group on Steam? Couldn't find any.

Yeah, the more I play - the more and more noobs I see. :/ There were times when I got good teammates though, and that was truly awesome. <3

Surprisingly enough, normal and hard don't seem all that different, but insane is.. insane. I couldn't make it past the first level. :S Though right now I'm busy with other achievements.
