soldat flag physics
« on: May 05, 2012, 04:33:06 pm »
hi

i was just wondering if the devs are aware of the reasons causing the flags in the game to act like a retarded time traveler on heroin that they are in network games and if there's any way it can be fixed?

thanks

p.s. by popular demand, by the flag acting like a retarded time traveler on heroin i meant the following things

sometimes (usually) when the flag gets to fly on its own weight it
1) takes a random thousand-percent boost in speed
2) takes a random direction
3) teleports to another random location

If you have a demo of that particular issue that would help.
Or at least some info when it exactly happens or how to reproduce it.

Would save tons of source code jiggling time ;)

Well you could start by trying to fix power throws that might help? I think ymies means that most times when you are moving fast and being chased and know your going to die, so you try and throw the flag forward towards your teammates it goes vertically up or can even go backwards... I would start by looking at however player speed effects flag throwing(?) if it does(?) this might be something to look at :)

1) takes a random thousand-percent boost in speed
This must be powerthrow. I'm not the best to decrive how you do it but I think you first throw flag against a poly to 'build up pressure' then throw it in oposite direction to release the pressure together with your throw.
Another way is to throw flag and then shoot it with spas right after, and I don't think that can be compared.

2) takes a random direction
I allready reported that flag goes in the direction of the gun instead of the cursor. so when reloading it will go either left or right.

3) teleports to another random location
I don't think I have ever seen that?

@Shoozza

The flag throw physics are a total disaster.

There are so many issues with it. Instead of trying to fix all of them.
Wouldn't it make more sense to rewrite it completely from scratch?

what are you guys talking about, you guys seriously have no idea what this is about?

the flag has always been as it is, it can sometimes bounce towards you when you throw it away, it can sometimes fly the other other base when you just throw it mid air, also works with spas AT RANDOM. it's neither unheard of that the flag flies to another location and no one is able to see the flag while it's flying

there are no formulae for this shit, for what i can tell based on my years of experience. it has always been like that and anyone who's played the game should understand what i'm talking about. i'm just wondering if anyone knows what's causing the flag to act so unpredictably at times

edit: power throws are clearly another case because they are pretty much reproducable

I've lost count of how many times I've seen desperate attempts to pass the flag, only to end up in the wrong place and into enemy hands, despite the aim was correct.
The problem is once you are no longer carrying the flag it's position governed by the server's physics, while in-between the server's updates the client's physics take over and the two are poorly synced. The result being very jumpy and odd and on top of that, the physics are, indeed, bad.

It's pretty easy to reproduce in multiplayer. Throws work ok in SP, so it probably has to do with netcode. The higher the ping - the more random flag throws are. Not sure how powerthrows work though. Don't have any demos, sorry. :(

To add on what ymies said, like on a map like Blade, map will sometimes show movements of goin low and bounce right from shots, but the shots are pointed down towards they are going so its impossible for it to go another way but down..or it should but soldat physics are werid as is.
