Sytrus' Ruger Tips
Alright, I'm pretty bored and you know what happens when I'm bored. I try to help you bunch of buggers by wrapping my thoughts and experiences about different weapons into some letters nad telling you what I think and know.
This time, it's the Ruger 77's turn.
About two months ago, I was one of those who liked to call the Ruger a 'c2k' weapon, "click to kill".
I admit that I learned to know the Ruger then, because I just wanted to have better skill with it. It's by far harder than many players think.
The key is, that the Ruger in Realistic Mode and in Normal Mode is differing in it's ways to use it and to counter it. This is why I'll chop the tutorials into two parts: Realistic Mode and Normal Mode.
The BasicsThe
Ruger-77 in real life is a hunting rifle.
The Real-life Ruger-77, unmoddedYou can see from its simple design, that it's a bit out-of-date nowadays, but used a lot because of its good price (my dad hunts with one, too =D). It can be modified with multiple additions such as scopes or tripods.
In the game, the ruger is pretty close to its original. The clip takes four bullets, just as the original. For hunting a deer, that's enough, in a CTF this can be tricky. Reloading takes quite some time in the game. Reading the stats you'd say it's not that long, but in the battle you're going to find yourself in some trouble then. Aiming works faster in a 2-Dimensional world, though =P.
Let's break it down and proceed towards the main part.
In-game Tips
The Ruger is comlicated. it's far away from being easy to use, althought the way of use depends on the map you play.
Realistic ModeHow to use the Ruger-77Be patient. In realistic mode, you should take some time for the aiming. Once an enemy with an automatic rifle sees you, he will need to aim himselves and then start shooting. You can at least take an equal amount of aiming, but take as much time as you need.
Aiming for the head is a good idea, really. You'll notice that a headshot in realistic mode is an instant-kill. When you aim for the other guys head and he aims for yours, you'll be the winner as soon as you both let the shots fly.
Calculate, that the bullet will
sink down somewhat being in the air. It's not
that much to think about, but it's there. Long shots will not hit where you aim them, you need to grow a feeling of how to get that.
Mancer once gave the tip to
play with 100% mouse sensivity, wich is a good one. It forces you to aim very good, because every little struggle will miss already. Once you become decent then, reduce the mouse sensivity
slowly. It worked for me.
Basically it's even a good idea to keep on playing with a high mouse sensivity in my opinnion, because I can just aim closer then.
The Ruger has one other great advantage in my oppinion. You can aim it perfectly when holding it over a
collider. So, prone down behind a collider and aim from there. It gives you more time for aiming and doesn't interfere it anyhow. You just gotta watch out not to be hit by 'nades, they blast me out of colliders pretty often.
As soon as you get the chance,
reload. Heck, do that with every weapon, but with the Ruger, it's much more important. Once you run out of ammunition in a shooting, you're left hanging. The only way that saves
me in those situations, is my trusty knife =D.
The recoil is the last instance that makes the Ruger very hard in Realistic Mode. I cannot tell you how to handle it. This is just one thing where only pracitce can help you.
How to avoid the Ruger-77[/u]
A common tactic against Snipers is spraying and it will never work out against a skilled Rugerer.
The Ruger is good for hunting down sprays easily, in the hands of the right people. If you spray a Rugerer, he'll just guess where the bullets are coming from and let loose some shots there - this'll end lethal for you pretty soon.
Spraying doesn't work. Keeping the Rugerer on distance is also
pretty useless. He can shoot better on distance than you with any other weapon besides the Barret, but there you got the movement Acc. and all that stuff.
A good way to counter the Ruger is
jetting up and moving a lot. For me, it's ten times harder to hit a moving target in the air, than a moving target on the ground. Gaining a height advantage is a very good idea, because it'll protect your head.
Protect your head as much as you can. As soon as I see a Rugerer, I roll over and stay proned. Good rugerers have reflexes, that will pwn you all the way. If you roll over, their first shots often miss, giving you time to open fire.
Use the
reload to succeed. The Ruger's reload is just very long. At least it's long enough to finish a Rugerer off in that time, trust me. Once you notice he's stepping backwards, you step forwards twice faster, spraying after him.
Trap him. I often made the expirience, that players tend to run forward carelessly when their enemy 'escaped'. By escaping, I mean just stepping past the next hill and waiting there. This works good against the Ruger because you have the
momentum of surprise and you're pretty close to him.
Normal ModeIn Normal Mode, the Ruger as by far less power than in Realistic Mode, but you don't have to deal with the recoil.
It's actuallly even more important to get your enemys head, because that means that two hits kill him. This would give you a decent starting point to face another enemy and at least hurting him, so you could finish him off with the SOCOM.
If it takes you three hits to kill somebody, you'll have to reload, no matter what's going on. As soon as the enemy's dead, reload your Ruger, otherwise you won't have a frigging chance against the next one.
The tip from Realistic Mode also works here: Take time to aim and stay in one spot. The ruger does have movement accurarcy. Also, use colliders to take cover.
The Secondary ChoiceSecondaries are the most precious gift, jah has given you. They can save the day in any kind of situation.
USSOCOMThe USSOCOM is often used as an addition to the Ruger, wich isn't a dumb idea.
Once you hit your enemy with one or two shots, he'll not survive much more than five shots of the SOCOM, wich go out very fast. It's a great choice for surviving the reload.
Combat KnifeThe knife needs a lot of practice, but in the hands of a skilled player, it can become pretty deadly.
Just press the 'drop weapon'-button to throw the knife. Enemies hit, will die instantly.
The knife isn't chosen often by Rugerers in long and big maps such as ctf_Run, because it will then literally fall short. However, it's my favourite secondary.
Not only because the kills with it have that "pwned-factor" with them, more because it can work like a 'nade just more precise.
Once you surely need an instant-kill, rip this little mugger out and charge the blaze.
M72 LAWThe LAW is quite a good choice if you are more out for long-range battles.
It's hard to use within the heat of the battle, simply because you need to crouch or prone to be able to shoot it. This is why I don't like to combine it with the ruger, because it can barely get you good on many bigger maps.

Alright, this is about it. You have now learned a lot (hopefully =D) about using and countering the Ruger.

Please don't spray Mancer, it sucks.
