Sytrus' Ruger Tips

Alright, I'm pretty bored and you know what happens when I'm bored. I try to help you bunch of buggers by wrapping my thoughts and experiences about different weapons into some letters nad telling you what I think and know.

This time, it's the Ruger 77's turn.

About two months ago, I was one of those who liked to call the Ruger a 'c2k' weapon, "click to kill".
I admit that I learned to know the Ruger then, because I just wanted to have better skill with it. It's by far harder than many players think.

The key is, that the Ruger in Realistic Mode and in Normal Mode is differing in it's ways to use it and to counter it. This is why I'll chop the tutorials into two parts: Realistic Mode and Normal Mode.

The Basics
The Ruger-77 in real life is a hunting rifle.

The Real-life Ruger-77, unmodded

You can see from its simple design, that it's a bit out-of-date nowadays, but used a lot because of its good price (my dad hunts with one, too =D). It can be modified with multiple additions such as scopes or tripods.

In the game, the ruger is pretty close to its original. The clip takes four bullets, just as the original. For hunting a deer, that's enough, in a CTF this can be tricky. Reloading takes quite some time in the game. Reading the stats you'd say it's not that long, but in the battle you're going to find yourself in some trouble then. Aiming works faster in a 2-Dimensional world, though =P.

Let's break it down and proceed towards the main part.

In-game Tips
The Ruger is comlicated. it's far away from being easy to use, althought the way of use depends on the map you play.

Realistic Mode
How to use the Ruger-77
[Ruger]Be patient. In realistic mode, you should take some time for the aiming. Once an enemy with an automatic rifle sees you, he will need to aim himselves and then start shooting. You can at least take an equal amount of aiming, but take as much time as you need.
Aiming for the head is a good idea, really. You'll notice that a headshot in realistic mode is an instant-kill. When you aim for the other guys head and he aims for yours, you'll be the winner as soon as you both let the shots fly.

[Ruger] Calculate, that the bullet will sink down somewhat being in the air. It's not that much to think about, but it's there. Long shots will not hit where you aim them, you need to grow a feeling of how to get that.

[Ruger] Mancer once gave the tip to play with 100% mouse sensivity, wich is a good one. It forces you to aim very good, because every little struggle will miss already. Once you become decent then, reduce the mouse sensivity slowly. It worked for me.
Basically it's even a good idea to keep on playing with a high mouse sensivity in my opinnion, because I can just aim closer then.

[Ruger] The Ruger has one other great advantage in my oppinion. You can aim it perfectly when holding it over a collider. So, prone down behind a collider and aim from there. It gives you more time for aiming and doesn't interfere it anyhow. You just gotta watch out not to be hit by 'nades, they blast me out of colliders pretty often.

[Ruger] As soon as you get the chance, reload. Heck, do that with every weapon, but with the Ruger, it's much more important. Once you run out of ammunition in a shooting, you're left hanging. The only way that saves me in those situations, is my trusty knife =D.

[Ruger] The recoil is the last instance that makes the Ruger very hard in Realistic Mode. I cannot tell you how to handle it. This is just one thing where only pracitce can help you.

How to avoid the Ruger-77
[/u]
[Ruger] A common tactic against Snipers is spraying and it will never work out against a skilled Rugerer.
The Ruger is good for hunting down sprays easily, in the hands of the right people. If you spray a Rugerer, he'll just guess where the bullets are coming from and let loose some shots there - this'll end lethal for you pretty soon. Spraying doesn't work.

[Ruger] Keeping the Rugerer on distance is also pretty useless. He can shoot better on distance than you with any other weapon besides the Barret, but there you got the movement Acc. and all that stuff.

[Ruger] A good way to counter the Ruger is jetting up and moving a lot. For me, it's ten times harder to hit a moving target in the air, than a moving target on the ground. Gaining a height advantage is a very good idea, because it'll protect your head.

[Ruger] Protect your head as much as you can. As soon as I see a Rugerer, I roll over and stay proned. Good rugerers have reflexes, that will pwn you all the way. If you roll over, their first shots often miss, giving you time to open fire.

[Ruger] Use the reload to succeed. The Ruger's reload is just very long. At least it's long enough to finish a Rugerer off in that time, trust me. Once you notice he's stepping backwards, you step forwards twice faster, spraying after him.

[Ruger] Trap him. I often made the expirience, that players tend to run forward carelessly when their enemy 'escaped'. By escaping, I mean just stepping past the next hill and waiting there. This works good against the Ruger because you have the momentum of surprise and you're pretty close to him.

Normal Mode

In Normal Mode, the Ruger as by far less power than in Realistic Mode, but you don't have to deal with the recoil.

[Ruger] It's actuallly even more important to get your enemys head, because that means that two hits kill him. This would give you a decent starting point to face another enemy and at least hurting him, so you could finish him off with the SOCOM.
If it takes you three hits to kill somebody, you'll have to reload, no matter what's going on. As soon as the enemy's dead, reload your Ruger, otherwise you won't have a frigging chance against the next one.

[Ruger] The tip from Realistic Mode also works here: Take time to aim and stay in one spot. The ruger does have movement accurarcy. Also, use colliders to take cover.

The Secondary Choice

Secondaries are the most precious gift, jah has given you. They can save the day in any kind of situation.

USSOCOM
The USSOCOM is often used as an addition to the Ruger, wich isn't a dumb idea.

[socom] Once you hit your enemy with one or two shots, he'll not survive much more than five shots of the SOCOM, wich go out very fast. It's a great choice for surviving the reload.

Combat Knife
The knife needs a lot of practice, but in the hands of a skilled player, it can become pretty deadly.

[knife] Just press the 'drop weapon'-button to throw the knife. Enemies hit, will die instantly.
The knife isn't chosen often by Rugerers in long and big maps such as ctf_Run, because it will then literally fall short. However, it's my favourite secondary.
Not only because the kills with it have that "pwned-factor" with them,  more because it can work like a 'nade just more precise.
Once you surely need an instant-kill, rip this little mugger out and charge the blaze.

M72 LAW
The LAW is quite a good choice if you are more out for long-range battles.

[law] It's hard to use within the heat of the battle, simply because you need to crouch or prone to be able to shoot it. This is why I don't like to combine it with the ruger, because it can barely get you good on many bigger maps.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+--

Alright, this is about it. You have now learned a lot (hopefully =D) about using and countering the Ruger.

There are more tuts to come from me, so expect something!

Please don't spray Mancer, it sucks.

who needs help with an m79 ffs!

Best advice ever, don't get yourself binked, you can't hit them when you are binked, best thing vs and auto is to stay in one place, i know it seems kind of odd but taking advantage of the colliders on the ground and grenades when they come in for the kill can make using the ruger really good.

I would also recommend using a soccom rather then a saw or a law, you can finish them off if 2 shots don't kill them, you could use the knife but unless you are good with it it won't help you any more then any other secondary when used with the ruger.

i know how to use an m79, i just want him to write aout it... or maybe i could beat him to it! ... nah, i guess thats his thing. its for the people that think m79 is a n00b weapon, when clearly it takes skill. probably the hardest thing about it is moving and making a long arch shot. which is rewarding when pulled off perfeclty.

your sig is too big fritz.
the ruger is pretty hard to learn. I have been using it for a few days and did pretty good, but this one guy with a steyr won alot of duals with me. it was not just that he was particurlarly skilled because I kicked his ass when I switched to mp5 but ruger might have a weak spot vs steyr.

It is because the styer has a similar arc/speed, so you can't tactically manuver so that you can hit them but they can't hit you, and it binks the hell out of the ruger, definatly the ruger's achillies' heel.

I don't agree with your thoughts about the M72 LAW. It's a very powerful weapon with Ruger-77.

At each map start or respawn I make a random shot in the middle point of the map and actually it's very possible that you'll take down a player, what is quite important.

I don't use the jet boots too often, mostly run, so it doesn't take too much time to aim and fire a rocket.

Also at the start remember to change your weapon to the M72 LAW. It saves precious time on loading the missile. Better here than in the battlefield.

I've never used the mouse sensitivity @ 100%. Currently I have mine at like 15% due to my new mouse and it's personal sensitivty colliding with the games'. I guess that'd make it like 35-45%. These are good tips although I do them daily and have been for a few years.

Here are a few of my own quirks I've discovered over my playing time.

[Ruger] Don't get nervous. Take enough precision in your aiming as you would any other single-shot gun. If you get too anxious to take out opponents, chances are you will miss shots. Be calm, have faith in your aiming and go for the skull.

[Ruger] Take them out before they can take you out. If you're able to down an enemy from a great distance ( usually 40-50m ), taking out others behind him ( especially in a team mode ) isn't as difficult. This is priority when there are more powerful weapons on the field. I usually take out a Barrett-user from a distance, usually with cover, that has his eyes on my teammates, so casualties aren't as devastating.

[Ruger] Double-Wield. I've only recently been using this, but if you're able to neutralize a fellow Ruger user, take his Ruger. 4 shots is equally lethal, so think about what you can do with 8 shots to your advantage. The only con is that you don't have the cushion of a SOCOM to bink deadlier weapons. If you missed with your first clip, remember where you aimed and aim a bit lower then that with your second Ruger.

[socom] The SOCOM is your friend, if you're ever sprayed, swap to the SOCOM and spray right back. If you were able to land a few decent shots on your opponent with your Ruger, he's more then likely to hit the dirt before you do.

Best combination is ruger with grenades. In Alt ways it's really useful. One grenade and one shoot.

Using the m79: Learn to aim.
Avoiding the M79: Learn to jump.
Secondary with the m79: Chainsaw.
Best tactic for the m79: Generic laming.

Why do you write about secondary's? All secondarys work good with all weapons.
< ok, saw isn't good. Ah, and minigun isn't good too ;) >
