DM Desktop - play on my computer
« on: May 03, 2007, 07:21:55 am »
Desktop
by Tim (KamikazeDuck) Jeffs

I made a map like this a while ago which I never released because it didn't look good without transparent polygons (I had sceneries of the icons over the polygons).

I've completely redone everything now that Soldat 1.4 has been released with a new layout, transparent polygons and added monitor/speakers/desk (which wasn't in the original idea).

It's waypointed.

Overview & screens:

(Note: Requires Soldat 1.4 - it has transparent polygons)

I really love the idea and how the computer setup itself looks, but the battlefield is kinda odd looking. The transparent polygons are still visible, giving the appearance of large mostly clear bricks scattered about. Seeing a player standing in midair between two desktop icons just looks... odd. I also don't see this really requiring transparent polygons, as a well cropped background image could provide the same effect. :)

I'm also surprised the layout of the land doesn't really follow the slope of the Bliss field. Nonetheless, a great idea, and a Desktop Soldat server turning maps of the default Windows desktop images could be fun. :)

Try the map, the gameplay is alright.

When you say that a well cropped background image could create the same effect, do you mean covering the polygons with the icons as scenery? When I tried that in my previous attempt at the idea, the edges of the scenery would flicker whenever you moved.

I chose the "Bliss" background because everyone knows it... and hates it. The background terrain didn't look very interesting for a layout so I decided to make most of the layout out of the icons.

Well... their my excuses.  ;)

Hey, I like Bliss. :P I think Windows desktop wallpaper such as Home, Azul, Tulips, Stonehenge, and Red moon desert could make for decent enough maps, at least for a 1-on-1 style DM game. Probably not worth the time to make it happen, though. :P

This could still be categorized into Poly-Art. Original, but a 1-on-1 kind of map. Neat, and awesome poly placement and shading. Definetly worth a download. Good job, KamikazeDuck ;)
