clevo m860tu
nvidia 260m
hitachi 250gb 7200
4gb ddr3
P8700 2.53ghz
$1500

It's pretty baseline, since I knew I wasn't going to be folding proteins or anything like that; mostly wanted the 260m and at the time the only other 15" with an ungimped 260 was the m15x, which I definitely didn't want.

I think you paid a little too much, considering those specs are quite old..

Was it off their website? Or locally?

What res is it at? That's the deal breaker usually for me.. Once you use 1920 x 1200 you'll never want to go back to something like 1280 x 800.

It wasn't a mac. He put a mac sticker on a Sager.

It was a good price back during summer 2009; Asus had a similar offering but it had a gimped card while AW had build issues [lots of people complaining about cracking hinges and casings]; I think MSI offered a cheaper 260 based platform, but I went with the Sager since the large quantity of user opinions left me more sure of its characteristics. After all my research I felt the Sager had the best compromise between build quality, performance and price. I got mine from XoticPC, unlike mom's which I ordered directly from Sager.

1920x1200 was offered, but I stuck with the default 1680x1024 and I haven't really found it wanting. The only thing I regret is choosing the 250gb HDD.

The only thing I regret is choosing the 250gb HDD.

Compared to how things were ten years ago (I have parts to prove it) laptop hard drives today are effortless to replace/upgrade since they all use the same exact connectors. They're cheap as f**k too.

Just go snag a 1TB 2.5"/sata drive off newegg, put it and your current laptop drive in a normal pc tower, boot an ubuntu livecd, use dd to copy over the drive then use gparted to grow the partition&ntfs filesystem to make use of the additional space.

This part is gibberish to me. I just thought I'd backup my files and reinstall on a new drive but if there was an easy way to copy over everything that would be even better.

Assuming you have your existing laptop hard drive and the new one in a normal computer and have booted an ubuntu livecd:

1) Open terminal, run "sudo -i" to become root
2) Run "fdisk -l"

From the information given (example output), you should be able to ascertain which drive (drives under linux start with /dev/sdX where X identifies the drive) is the old one since it'll show the windows partitions. The new drive will be blank and will claim to not contain a valid partition table.

For the sake of explanation, let's assume your old drive is /dev/sda and your new drive is /dev/sdb

3) Run "dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb" Make sure you get the order right; otherwise you'll zero out your existing drive with the empty contents of the new one. This will take a long time and it won't give a progress bar, so leave it running overnight or something

4) When that's done the new drive will be identical to the old one, including having the smaller disk geometry so its partition will remain 250GB in size. Run gparted (System > Administration > Partition Editor), select the 1TB drive, drag the partition to fill the size of the drive and click Apply.

5) Shut down system, put new drive into your laptop, boot and enjoy your system *exactly* how it was before except with an additional 750GB of space.

imho reinstalling everything and manually copying stuff over from backups is archaic, especially on windows systems.

Perhaps, but sometimes it's nice to just get a fresh start.  For my own part, I like reformatting every year or two.

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

Sorry, but all that shows me is that you fail at maintaining a windows system. I never have a reason to reinstall windows unless the drive crashes.

Just keep things organized, defragged, virus free, and periodically kill temporarily files.

You're forgetting the human factor.  Windows runs just fine, but there's a ton of stuff that I put on the system that just doesn't need to be there.  Shortcuts accumulate, documents exist that aren't needed, the folder structure might be a bit disorganized, and so on.  If I'm reformatting, it's to correct my problems, not Windows'.
