Why so many stickies?
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:48:26 pm »
It's possible that this goes somewhere else. If so, sorry. If not, read on.

Why are there so many stickies in this forum? Seriously, do we need 11 of them? What is the purpose of the Mapping Tutorials thread if it's never used? Why am I asking so many rhetorical questions?
Here's what I'd do to curb the sticky overflow:
Unsticky and add to the Mapping tutorials thread:
Compendium of mapping knowledge (debatable)
MisterCharles' Awesome Multitexture tutorial...
Wraithlike's Grande Mapping tutorial.

Unsticky entirely - and why:
Help requests - what is the purpose of this anyways? Why not just make a new thread with your help request?
The Map Scrapyard/The Drawing Board - Let people just make a new thread, that way there can be more extended discussion about things that would normally just be looked over and forgot.
Cyst's map compilation - It's a really nice set of maps, but it's old and I don't really see its purpose here either.

And POW, all of a sudden there will be order in the forums.

You know what, I absolutely agree.

Cysts' Map Compilation isn't very good anyway!

I've been meaning to do this for a while, now I can do it, and if I get in trouble I can divert blame. Win/Win situation.

Oh, I actually liked them though... Well it doesn't matter so much. You do have a point.

Those were nice places to dump ideas you didn't care about though, but thought someone else might want em. I still see them there, so I guess I don't have much cause for talking as if they're going to get trashed :-X

I do disagree with one Point, with Wraithlikes Mapping Tutorial, coz I read the Tutorial and did exercises for mapping, I think some Tutorials should be overworked, coz the pictures arent there, and whos tutorial has no pictures should be unstickied or deleted, but the good Tutorials should stay on top coz they REALY help!

Mine will be better.  PM me if you want to know the list ahead of time.

Cyst's map compilation isn't very good because invisible polygons weren't even introduced then, and map compilations were a little wonky back then. His compilations showed some maps, that despite some limitations and a few stupid polybugs, showed to have very good gameplay and/or visuals.

Yeah, some maps.  It seems that Keron looked for the visual/atmospheric aspects of the maps more than the gameplay, because he mentions those two things quite frequently in his topic.  I look for fun, not art, in maps, and while some maps have nailed both aspects down straight in the head (ie Superpants and Japanheights), there are others that just look nice and does not impress much in gameplay (ie Momento).

Keep in mind Keron mentioned in the first post that he indeed is biased about certain maps made by certain people, and also will not include maps made by people that have bad attitude, even if their maps are awesome.

In which case, inf_fear totally would have made the list in terms of visuals, gameplay, layout, and the hilarity. ctf_x totally would have made the list in terms of gameplay, which is a HUGE success. Lots of new and awesome maps are coming, and I'd appreciate it if the compilation list was still stickied, but kept updated every year by various moderators.

I sent him a message once asking to add maps made by Viggoloniggolo and other mappers and he replied that he purposely refused to do so.
