Quick Refresh
« on: February 06, 2009, 07:03:44 pm »
This is something I was really hoping the new soldat will have, Quick Refresh. Quick Refresh is very simple and should be easy to script. I just allows you to quickly refresh the servers and see who has left or joined after the time you "Requested Servers". Its very handy for people who have slower internet or slower computers. Its also very useful because it gets very annoying to Request Servers over and over again just to see the updated servers. So, could this be implemented into the new Soldat 1.5 please.

This idea would require a change of the lobby system, as currently, when you request servers, you request the list from the lobby server, including how many people, what maps, all that stuff. The only thing you request from each individual server is a ping. Because of this, you couldn't easily implement the idea. Anyway, if you did, I'd say you'd be waiting longer than just clicking "request servers".

Scripting has nothing to do with the lobby.

It does if you are directly changing to source scripts.

I personally wouldn't use this feature much (i like full refresh, it's more reliable), but I still think it's something that should be added at some point.
Getting a full list of servers sometimes does take a plenty of time.

I'd say you'd be waiting longer than just clicking "request servers".

Since we have separate "ping" button, I think having separate "quick refresh" (or whatever it would be called) button would work also.
Btw, maybe it should be possible to "quick refresh" a single server? Many times i find myself requesting all servers only to check whether my favourite server is not full.

Yes, but the ping button only sends a single packet and waits for the reply. A quick refresh option would require a lot more information being provided by each server, unnecessarily increasing the bandwidth usage of each server. The lobby is designed not only as a central point to get information for all Soldat servers, but also to reduce the bandwidth used by each server providing information, since it only has to do it once per minute or so, not a hundred times.

yeah well, you guys are worrying about less important things, instead of scripting and adding things soldat actually needs. Now quit ur jibba jabba and start scripting :D!

You guys might want to go and look up the definition of Script before you go making demands like that.

Also, F11 because SpiltCoffee is right.

Wouldn't it be possible to connect through the file-y port and get gamestat.txt through the soldat client? (though that doesn't solve the whole bandwidth issue)

Btw does the lobby store the info about who's in the server and such?

Didn't someone make a lobby program which used the all seeing eye, and if the servers had ASE enabled you could see who was in the servers?
