True Predator
« on: February 22, 2009, 12:39:29 pm »
I think when players are in the Predator, the game should even hide the jet flames. Otherwise, they're literally ground hogs.

The Predator is not the real as in the movie...

But in the movie the Predator didn't fly, so its kinda justified. But he WAS able to create a BIG explosion... now that would pack a punch, going to enemy base while invisible and blowing yourself up with a proper bang.

I don't remember the predator having jets in his boots.

No. Predator bonus is based on The Predator from the movie, who does not use jets. So because of that, the point is to make you avoid using jets... Learn to be a ninja better.

there should be a 1 second period before the flames are shown, cause backfliping can be nasty

well, if the predator has backflipped he would leave no traces behind him, and a normal soldat backlip is almost always using jets after the short animation

yes, still, predator can't really hide that well, as he can be seen if you look closely. In the predator movie the predator didn't have jetboots, and that's one thing, but soldat has jetboots, so a predator soldat should be able to hide his flames.

Have you epicly failed today?

I think that when you are close to the predator you should hear that clicking sound.

Predator should be more visible (Including jet flames) and make more noise as he gets closer to you, and be fully invisible and silent until he gets to within 1/2 a screen width.

F11 predator is mighty!

On botmatch: fly as much as you want, get under fire if you shoot, have fun
On playermatch: has more tactical grace, behave like a ninja, prown, wait for a little sacrifice coming too near to your knife, or run as fast as you can and kill everything coming too near to your chainsaw or shoot with your barret on them.

Short: predator, like it is, rocks!

well, if the predator has backflipped he would leave no traces behind him, and a normal soldat backlip is almost always using jets after the short animation
Then you aren't exactly backflipping properly, because you HOLD DOWN the jets. To do the backflip without jets, just tap the jet button rather than hold it down.

I think the current Predator is good enough, though yes, I agree that there could be more options, like being able to adjust the visibility and time.

If you can't sneak past enemies quickly, then its either you're not ninja enough, or your opponents have really good eyesight.

and to add something:
i play usualy trenchwars, and the maps dont have any jets, and the backflip is alot bigger when i hold rmb, instead of just clicking it
at least i see it so, idk about others

and the best way to find a predator is to turn the sound off if you are the only one in the screen (not including the guy with predator)
sound is pretty distinctive, and you can hear from where is he comming if you have decent sound quality

as much as i love being predator, i think it's well checked by the fact that you need to sneak on the floor to be well hidden.  Perhaps you can make your jets 40% transparent so it's a bit less noticeable (but still reasonably much)
Can't think of anything original to put here...

I like the relation between pred's invisibility and distance, but then long-range guns would be useless against a pred you can only notice in mid-close-range, and using melee weapons would be too challenging for a pred.

I've been playing on some pred-mod servers (INF with defending blue team against attacking red predator(s)), and some people would change gamma setting up to the max, which made seeing pred a lot easier.
Custom opacity setting for preds would be helpful, especially if it could also be changed dynamically with scripts.

As for original idea of the post - f11. There should be ways of detecting preds, and seeing/hearing his jets are one of them. Maybe slightly lower opacity for jets, but not complete transparency.

The jet flames and the outline is always what I look for when I know there is a pred. So no, F11.

If there was ever going to be a change to predator, I think you could only go so far as to lower the opacity of the jets, but not by much.

Although I do like the idea of hearing Predator's 'croaking' when you are close to a pred user :P It would be subtle yet spooky.
Although this sound file would have to be hard-encoded, otherwise ppl would change it to something loud and blatant to easily detect pred users.

I like the idea of being able to hear him with that "croaking" sound that Predators are known to make.

However, implementing that idea will actually downgrade the Predator, even if the sound file is hard-coded. It is already considered difficult to sneak past people if you are moving in certain ways because those would reveal your position (therefore, if you want to be "ninja", your movement would be pretty restricted and slower), plus 25 seconds is quite a limit if that is the case.

As for the idea of complete invisibility until too close, that seems okay because its like a balanced shifting of the stats. Move too slow and in an enclosed place, you're likely to get spotted without cover. Move quickly and in a larger place, you're more likely to succeed, though observant users would see you flash past and they'd start chasing for you.

When it comes to jets, I'd say there is no need to change it - you aren't supposed to jet if you're trying to be really ninja anyway.
