Uh. Smudge tool is not exactly digital painting, but oh well. The fur on creature's leg actually turned out kinda nice.

Though you really should practice drawing bodies. Right now it looks like just a stick with a bunch of other sticks sticking out. Look up some tutorials on drawing people and try to add more curves to limbs and torso, also pay attention to the proportions (creature's torso is way too long (I do that sometimes too >_< )).

I only used the smudge tool to make the fur. Didn't know how I could make it look like that without it.

Do you think I should work on the background some more?

Well, background could definitely use improvement. Right now it feels very flat.
you need:
1) More defined shape of the rocks (add brighter and sharper highlights on one side, and shadows on another side)
2) More depth (make several layers of rock formations and make them gradually fade into the background)
Check out some examples here: http://alicialumb.com/Background%20Painting.html
Especially the 3 pictures on the second row from the bottom. Look at the shape of the rocks and how they fade into backround.

Really though I don't think you should start with pictures that have both foreground and background. Try painting just backgrounds or just foregrounds first, cause at first it's really hard to get them both right.

I just know that smudge tool is a bit overused by people new to digital painting. Not saying it shouldn't be used at all, just in a less obvious manner. Otherwise it looks silly, like lens flare.
As for other ways to paint fur... to be honest, I don't know myself. I kinda know how to paint more cartoonish fur, but not the realistic one. :S

@DC: I never could understand your fascination with removing limbs and replacing them with various forms of weaponry...

@Matth: Haha, I made the concept for an online art class, and the creature should be some kind of "Changeling", so I decided to give it a pointy leg, a sword-arm and another pointy thing as an arm :P

I like to be special. Thats why while everyone's drawing scary creatures and machines of destruction - I draw cute little girls and butterflies. X_x

Well actually I started drawing some robot things too.
I wanted to try out a few things from this tutorial, and this is what I ended up with:

L[0ne]R you've gotta add a background to that butterfly one. It'll be my desktop background and I will love it forever.

Gamer_2k4

Only anime shows I've felt any interest in over the years are Pokemon (original TV series) and various hentai.
so clearly jgrp is a goddamn anime connoisseur. his opinion might as well be law here.

Best Admin: jrgp, he's like the forum mom and a pet dog rolled into one.

If you guys were trolling a bit less, this thread would not be messed up like that.
