I think the main problem with the photo is that it doesn't quite follow the rule of thirds. Theres too much sky and too little silhouettes. But since they're almost pitch-black - you could just paint more of them yourself.

Camera really isn't that big of an issue. I have Nikon D80 with a massive 18-200mm lens but my photos are sucky for the most part, especially when it comes to color balance.

well you are true in that case here.. but in general you re not right..
you have tot think about what you said.. you have spoken about rules.. 90% of the rules are set by any idiots, like rules how to eat , how to speak, how to do everything, .. even how to make art.
in the end it just need to look nice in its own way.

"rule" is just a way it's called. I see it more as a guideline or an advice.
You don't have to follow it and instead you could come up with something on your own, but rule of thirds can be of help too. You can also choose symmetry or halves or whatever you come up with.

The fact is that certain things look more appealing than the others. Rule of thirds and similar "rules" are only meant to teach us about those things, not make us follow them.

Nice photos, but here are a few things I personally didn't like:
1) Too much noise. If you have photoshop - try filters/noise/reduce noise. Also use blur tool on the sky because thats where the noise is most noticeable.
2) Not liking the tilt. 2nd photo is more or less OK, but the tilt of the horizon looks pretty bad on the 1st photo.

Also, post-processing means doing additional work on a photo (color correction and such). Personally I don't see much wrong with what you did, except maybe the boat is a little too glowy.
