I'm not very sure about this since I'm not a mapper, but wouldn't this require a map format change? If animated scenery were used to create this effect, wouldn't it be extremely laggy/memory eating?

If this happens, it'll be cool, but I really wouldn't care if it didn't.

Never thought of this. It would be interesting to put this into practice, but heck, it sounds cool.

I'm for it.

I am against this. This would take too much time to do and there are many bugs that need to be fixed. Every new feature brings new bugs into game, remember that. This feature would need

- a changing background
- scenery that changes it´s color with day and night
- polygons that changes also with day and night their colors.

I guess nobody would be unhappy if this won´t be implemented into Soldat nearby that most matches take just about 10 minutes.

I'm not a map maker or anything but I have a concept.

Either all pixels of the screen gradually grow darker, except for the HUD.

Or a screen-big rectangle covers the screen inbetween the HUD and the gameplay that has an opacity depending on the time of day.

I was also thinking in that as I was opening the thread. All you would need is a 1x1 uberstretched .GIF scenery with very slow framarate set at... 70% opacity at back (To keep the background color on) so by the time the scenery would get darker and darker and it would look night-like. Would be an alternative I guess... But don't expect a shiny sun coming up and then a lonely moon. I bet not.

He pretty much got a nice alternative.

Maybe we should experiment first...get a map a change the settings etc. This would be cool although I wanna see it first.

Personally, I'd like it and am all for it. But it probably won't get implemented....doesn't life just suck?

This would bring more realism to the game. I think this is cool. F12.

I think its unnecessary. Day and night wont be suitable on all maps. If you really want it that badly, create a day and night version of a map that suits it. I would like to see how the gif idea pans out though.

Yes, do it with a gif and not as a feature. It would suck.

Doing it with GIFs won't work, since they're not syncronized with server. (So while for some players it's day, for others it might be night already)
However there was a suggestion to have the ability to control sceneries with scripts (move, scale, change opacity, etc.). If this was implemented, adding something like night/day would be no problem. Simply make a black scenery, stretch it accross the whole map and change the opacity every # seconds. Along with that you can make sun disappear and moon and stars appear instead.

I'm not really a fan of day/night changes, because it makes Soldat a bit too complex. But then TW is meant to make Soldat more complex and realistic.. And I like the idea of controllable sceneries anyway, so I'll f12 at least on that.

I'm not very sure about this since I'm not a mapper, but wouldn't this require a map format change? If animated scenery were used to create this effect, wouldn't it be extremely laggy/memory eating?
Animated sceneries - dont know, havent tried them. But AFAIK, static sceneries shouldnt cause lags. As long as file size of the sceneries is kept small.

It adds more possibilities for mapping and gameplay. In this particular case, it will change gameplay from intense and open fight during day, to sneaky operations during night.

No, you are talking like shit Loner. Why should night and day be different from gameplay? It is just about how bright or how dark your screen is what I can get if I lower my gamma ammount on my desktop. If you have a change to night players won´t move slower (oh, is it so late? Okay, lets take this easy) or camp somewhere just because it´s night, they will play like before if they are no freaking dumblords that live actually in Soldat.
