New maps format, gonna make it?
« on: October 14, 2009, 05:28:19 am »
Feel free to present a new map format. I've been considering creating a new XML map format and integrating a form of scripting into maps, for triggers/movement etc. If anyone can design an XML map format layout with all current format features and any possible ideas, I emplore you to do so.

so now, asking the active community, let it be so?
On my mind, this is the first thread about New Map Format based on EnEsCe (!) words.

so come'on! lets use an another possibility to give Soldat some new kicks, many people want to see Soldat Refreshed

The mapping scene is pretty dead and worn out. How many more unique maps can be made? The only thing I'm willing to do would be to refurbish old, somewhat established maps of mine. Otherwise, I think I'll be winding down.
So uh, you bunch think it is time to call it quits?

Even though people tell me my maps are fun/great, they never play them.
Mapping is just not worth my time anymore.  I don't want to make something that no one will ever touch.
I spend my time drawing cartoons and composing Cave Story-esque music now.

I totally support NewSoldatMapsFormat. New format will bring the mapping section back to life. I dont want the best soldat mappers to leave. My bad, I know almost nothing about Soldat mapping :(

So what's about you? Maybe you can help? At least, what do you think about that?

About time. I will try to help and give more ideas about which format is better/lighter etc. Hope anyone can make this reality.

Yeah I will try and give a hand in too. Should be great how the community is getting involved more with Enesce now!

New map format will not only resurrect mapping, but gameplay itself too.
I also hope that server owners will do their share of refreshing soldat (add new maps instead of using default set, which is what happens on most servers, update maplists more often).

At this pace there will be vehicles, new weapons and grapplig hooks to fly with.
"At this pace"? Isn't lack of "pace" - all that everyone has been whining about on these forums for the past few years? It seems you're never satisfied with anything.

True, I HATE the current trend of making Soldat something different.

The "refresh" does not revive Soldat, but rather make a completely different game BASED on OLD Soldat.

I also hate all the "modding" and "scripting". All of it sucks. Bring back the DM and CTF publics from 2004.

Why not also add the weapons to be scriptable, also players and add ability for the server to define the player and scenery graphics? Pack everything in a simple file(like in Quake games) and send it to the client? That would allow complete total coversion mods.

But you see, the same game is only fun for so long. The reason why Soldat is still played is because of the ease of being able to modify things, and progress.

The reason why those publics are gone is probably because people got tired of them. How things currently stand may be a different story, as it has been five years, but trends come and go. It's true for anything.

Now, if there were to a be a new mapping format introduced, it wouldn't have to change anything. It would simply add to the ability to introduce new, and probably optional additions.

'nuf said.

I dont think it'll go as far as "vehicles and new weapons". But we do need change.

Sure, let's do it. I think what soldat really needs is to separate classic gamemodes from scripted ones. So that people who come to play Soldat - play Soldat, not MMods, Hexers, Trenchwars and other.

And I aggree with what Blacksheepboy just said.

Well what can be added to the map format that is not already game based should be the question people are trying to answer? The best bet would be an xml file, in my opinion, for a new file format so that map design can be done in PW and tweaking of variables and or values of said items may be edited using a text editor.
Here's one,

For server: Boolean internal_WM; //would choose to use maps internal Wm or provide own
For map: Each weapon with all of it's attributes
