Global Ban Hackers.
« on: October 16, 2009, 12:07:19 pm »
You say it cannot be done? Maybe? Well, I got an idea.

You gotta request servers before selecting a server right? Well. What about sending players IP to the lobby server and if that IP is blacklisted there. Then the player cannot request servers which means he can't play either. Same with Favourited servers.

would it give players extra lag? or what?

Discuss?

You don't need the lobby to play. You can just remember IP's of servers. And it's very easy to change your IP address. (and people who hack are likely to know how anyway)

Probably just would be a waste of time to implement.

He should be still still able to download the servers list.
The servers can download the blacklisted players list and decide if kick him.

Another additional idea:
When a server finds a hacker, it may send a vote to the lobby. Then the other servers may vote to add the banned guy to the Global blacklist.

Well, I think the only safe attempt to ban hackers globally would require to have an unique ID which belongs to an account for each Soldat client like in Steam. Hence, EnEsCe would have to implement some kind of account system for Soldat, which I think isn't worth the effort currently.

Account system -> utter fail.

No way to implement working "hacker block".

I had a similar idea, but instead of making users create an account - how about generating a special key inside Soldat.exe itself?
Each time Soldat is installed, a unique key can be generated (random or maybe even based on hardware and OS you're currently using). If your internal Soldat.exe key gets banned - the only way of getting on a server where you were banned would be to reinstall Soldat to generate a new key (or even download a whole new installer). If the key is based on your computer's OS and hardware, it would be even harder to change it.

It'd might be better to make it a key that's locked to your hardware, not randomly generated so you'd have to change out your ram/cpu/mobo to change it, kinda like microsoft's xp/vista copy protection stuff.

If you generated a unique key to send to each server, it could easily be spoofed, I would think. I guess you could try to use BattlEye as a carrier for the key, though.

I'm sure some will find the way around it - no protection is perfect. It might not prevent all the hackers from playing, but it will greatly reduce their numbers - there are a plenty of stupid/lazy ones among them who can't/don't want to find a way around the protection system.

I think having global ban list(IP and nick) for servers is a perfect solution here.

Yup, even better than accounts and more comfortable for Soldat players.

Well, not everyone got static IP and IPs might change very often (like once a day) or can be changed manually. Furthermore you can alter your Soldat nick very easily, therefore I don't think banning by IP + nick isn't the best solution to prevent hackers from disturbing the gameplay.

you cant globally ban hackers because it can take only 5 minutes for you to register a different ip hence allowing you to get back into the server again. The account system could be a possibility although i dont think MM or Enesce will be thinking about this anytime soon.

It's quite impossible to use a "key" for anything.  The hacks will have a tool to spoof the key, or just tool which changes the key inside Soldat.exe. No "CRC check the Soldat.exe" won't work, because the CRC can, and will be spoofed too.

Something you have a lot of experience with...

If you made BE carry the key, then you'd only have to protect BE instead of the entire game.

But who wants to change his IP+nick everytime (probably two times) he is banned. It's kinda annoying. I guess it will help a bit, but of course there's no way to stop all hackers.
