Can you multitask?
« on: October 28, 2009, 04:13:48 am »
Multitasking is a gift that is only given to the brain at birth, it makes it far easier to do multiple things at once without getting as stressed out.  For example, you might be able to enjoy music while working on some homework or whatever.  or play video games while talking to someone, let your imagination run wild

Aparrently, in general, girls are more likely to be able to multitask than guys.  I'm sure there are plenty of males that can however, just as there are females that can't.  I for one, cannot (male).

so... Can your brain multitask?

I couldn't multitask to save my life.. except for when I'm playing drums, it's a little odd really. But I think that's got more to do with training than genetic skills.

Yeah, I can actually do a few things at once given practice (e.g, changing gears driving a car, or riding a motorbike)  but I think those who can do it naturally would pick it up much quicker.

For example, I have no problem changing gears on a motorike (because i've practised) but when it comes to doing wheelies (yay) i'm actually quite bad, because it involves a gear change but slightly modified, so it feels like learning to change gears all over again.  It was the same learning to drive a manual car :S

hmm, I dunno, I think I can multi task pretty well, like chatting and playing simul games at the same time works perfectly fine, either it's that I just idle or I multi-task, who knows~.

Multi tasking is what you get after some time doing a few things at ones like studying, working and have a few hobbies. Anyone that got a normal "life" can multi task. But i'm kinda weird~ i can multi task x2 ^__^

Multitasking is not for men. That's sure.

Outside of computers, I focus on things seperately one at a time. As for in computers, mine is just too slow that doesn't allow me to multitask. If I do, I'll have to wait MINUTES until single actions are fully processed so I can do the next one. : S

I talk while listening to music and washing the dishes. I have a hard time adding a 4th task though.

don't really 'listening to music' counts as 1 task... I for one, rarely do anything without listening to music.

Well, last night I was setting up one of my friend's new dedicated servers.

He just had bare Debian installed and I was getting apache, suphp, mysql, tightvnc, fluxbox, transmission, wine, ecryptfs, and a bunch of other apps installed and configured to work correctly. Since it was over ssh (the command line) I didn't need to click anything; it was just very fast typing.

All the while I was doing it, I ate an entire 12" thin crust pizza from Dominos, as well as most of the bread sticks that came with it. I was probably done with both his server and the pizza in like 15 minutes.

I ate that crap so fast that in the morning I threw all of it up. :( But at least my keys and mouse are greasy as hell now so I'm able to work faster. :D

And if you want to count doing more than one thing at once on a computer as multi tasking, I usually have a few firefox's, sometimes a chrome or two, at least 4 konsole's, pidgin, rhythmbox, vinagre, transmission, a few evince's, and a some other apps spread out across my dual monitors.

Man I can't stand greasy input devices, I clean my mouse like every 2 days to keep it feeling fresh.

I'd rather have my fingers glide and slide over the keys than be obstructed by dry, clean, plastic.

Men aren't designed to multitask, try to cough while you're peeing.

I can do two things at once as long as they're using separate body parts, so I can talk while driving (and shifting gears), but I can't juggle.

He meant that if you're standing up pissing and cough you'll spray piss everywhere since you won't be able to hold still and maintain aim.

which is because of muscles contractions done while coughing.... not a great example... that is more about body control.

Multitasking? Not sure. I suppose I could do certain things with enough practise, but I prefer to pay attention. Most of the time I just quickly switch between tasks, but I don't do them all at the same time.

Though if "thinking" counts as a task - then I'm a pro multitasker. I can totally zone-out and at the same time keep doing what I was doing anytime, anywhere, while thinking about a thousand completely irrelevant things.
